Grow an Italian kitchen favorite with Principe Borghese Plum Tomato. This packet contains 100 non-GMO, heirloom, open-pollinated seeds. Small red, plum-shaped tomatoes develop in clusters and offer dense, meaty flesh suited to roasting, sauces, and drying with appropriate food-safe methods. This determinate variety benefits from support and is listed at approximately 75–80 days from transplant, depending on growing conditions. Picture a basket of ripe tomatoes becoming a fragrant tray of garlic-and-herb roasted tomatoes for dinner.

Germination Rate: 91%. Test Date: 10/25. TLM.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 75%

Why Choose Principe Borghese?

  • Meaty plum tomatoes: Dense flesh lends itself to concentrated flavor in sauces and roasted dishes.
  • Clustered fruit: Attractive clusters make checking ripeness and planning kitchen projects convenient.
  • Determinate habit: Plants tend toward a more concentrated harvest than indeterminate varieties while still benefiting from sturdy support.
  • Heirloom and open-pollinated: Save seeds from properly isolated plants to help preserve variety characteristics.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Start indoors: Sow approximately 1/4 inch deep, six to eight weeks before your expected last frost. Keep seed-starting mix warm and evenly moist.
  • Transplant carefully: Harden seedlings off gradually and transplant after frost danger has passed and soil has warmed.
  • Give plants room: Choose full sun and well-drained soil. Space approximately 24–36 inches apart, adjusting for your support system and local guidance.
  • Support early: Install a cage or stakes at planting to support fruit-laden branches and keep tomatoes off the ground.
  • Water consistently: Water at soil level and mulch once soil warms to help maintain even moisture.
  • Fertilize thoughtfully: Follow a soil test and fertilizer label directions; excessive nitrogen can favor leaves over fruit.
  • Harvest ripe: Pick fully colored fruit for fresh eating and roasting. Growing conditions affect maturity, size, and yield.

Garlic-and-Herb Roasted Principe Borghese Tomatoes

Made with harvested tomatoes, not the planting seeds in this packet. Serves 4. Prep time: 10 minutes. Cooking time: 35–45 minutes. Total time: 45–55 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ripe Principe Borghese tomatoes, halved lengthwise

  • 3 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil, optional

Directions

  1. Heat the oven to 400°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.

  4. Roast for 35–45 minutes, checking near the end, until softened and lightly caramelized. Timing varies with fruit size and oven.
  5. Scatter with fresh basil if desired. Serve warm alongside dinner, over pasta, or on toast.
