Choose Sunflowers for Your Garden

Single-stem varieties: These types generally produce one main flower per plant, making them useful for planned cut-flower plantings. Check each listing for spacing and harvest guidance.
Branching varieties: These plants develop multiple flowering stems, offering a different growth habit for garden displays and repeated cutting.
Color and form: Compare the individual varieties for flower color, bloom shape, mature height and days to maturity before choosing your favorites.
Fresh-cut arrangements: Sunflowers make bold focal flowers in bouquets. Choose varieties suited to your preferred stem length and flower size.

Tips for Growing Sunflowers

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Direct sow according to the individual variety's instructions once conditions are suitable for planting in your area. Allow enough space for the variety's mature size, especially for branching types.

Keep the seedbed moist during germination, then water as needed while plants establish. Taller varieties may benefit from support in exposed locations. For an extended cutting season, consider successive sowings of suitable varieties rather than planting every seed at once. Follow variety-specific guidance before pinching, since single-stem and branching types respond differently.
