Bring warm color and bold flower shapes to your garden with Rudbeckia seeds from David's Garden Seeds®. Often associated with familiar black-eyed Susans, Rudbeckia flowers feature daisy-like petals around a prominent raised central disc. They add cheerful seasonal interest to sunny borders, cutting gardens and informal landscape plantings.

Why Grow Rudbeckia?

Distinctive flowers: Raised central cones and spreading petals create eye-catching contrast in garden beds and bouquets.
Cut-flower appeal: Many varieties produce useful stems for fresh arrangements, bringing garden color indoors.
Pollinator interest: Open flowers attract visiting bees and butterflies when in bloom.
Seasonal seed heads: Leaving some mature heads standing can provide seeds for small birds and texture after flowering.

Tips for Growing Rudbeckia from Seed

Choose a sunny site: Give plants good sunlight and well-drained soil for strong growth and flowering.
Follow the variety's directions: Germination requirements, planting depth and sowing timing can differ. Use the packet instructions for your selected seeds.
Keep seedlings evenly moist: Water gently during establishment, avoiding prolonged soggy conditions.
Allow adequate spacing: Thin or transplant as directed to improve airflow and leave room for mature plants.
Support and maintain: Taller plants may need support in windy locations. Remove spent flowers to keep plantings tidy, or leave selected heads to mature for birds.
Check the growth habit: Rudbeckia includes annual, biennial and perennial types. Do not assume every variety returns each year or flowers on the same schedule.

Ways to Enjoy Rudbeckia

Sunny borders: Combine with plants that share similar light and soil needs for a lively seasonal display.
Cutting gardens: Grow stems for casual bouquets and mixed arrangements, harvesting according to the variety's recommendations.
Wildlife-friendly spaces: Enjoy visiting pollinators during bloom and leave some ripe seed heads for birds later in the season.
