Why Choose Red Sails Lettuce?

  • Colorful leaves: Green foliage with red-tipped edges adds contrast to garden beds and fresh salads.
  • Tender eating quality: Soft, ruffled leaves work well in lightly dressed salads and sandwiches.
  • Flexible harvests: Pick outer leaves while protecting the growing center, or harvest the plant when it reaches your preferred size.
  • Award-winning selection: Red Sails is an All-America Selections winner, offering an established choice for home gardens.
  • Season-extending potential: Its heat tolerance can help in warming weather, but extreme heat still encourages bolting and bitterness.
  • Open-pollinated heirloom: Suitable for seed saving with appropriate isolation and care to maintain the variety.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Plant in cool weather: Choose spring or fall planting dates suited to your region. In hot Texas locations, fall through spring often provides more favorable conditions than summer.
  • Sow shallowly: Cover seeds with about 1/8 inch of fine soil, following packet directions. Keep the surface evenly moist during germination.
  • Watch soil temperature: Hot soil can inhibit lettuce germination. Start seeds in a cooler, well-lit location when outdoor conditions are unsuitable.
  • Allow growing room: Thin to roughly 8–12 inches apart for larger loose-leaf plants, or grow closer for baby leaves according to packet guidance.
  • Prepare the soil: Use well-drained soil with finished compost. Containers need drainage holes and a suitable potting mix.
  • Provide light: Give plants good sunlight in cool weather. Afternoon shade may help reduce heat stress as temperatures rise.
  • Water consistently: Check shallow root zones frequently and maintain even moisture without waterlogging the soil.
  • Feed thoughtfully: Follow soil-test recommendations or vegetable-fertilizer label directions. Avoid excessive feeding.
  • Support and protection: No trellis is normally needed. Suitable row cover can help protect plants from pests or cold; ventilate during warm weather.
  • Harvest carefully: Remove a few outer leaves without damaging the center. Harvest before leaves become bitter or the plant bolts.
  • Succession sow: Plant small batches every two to three weeks while conditions remain favorable.

Nutritional Information

This section applies to harvested lettuce leaves, not planting seeds. No variety-specific nutrient analysis is supplied for Red Sails.

  • Fresh vegetable serving: Use lettuce as the leafy base of salads or as an addition to sandwiches.
  • Natural variation: Nutrient amounts depend on serving size, growing conditions, and maturity. Leaf color alone does not establish a precise nutrient content.
  • Finished dishes: Dressing, nuts, fruit, and other additions change the nutrition of a meal.

Numerical nutrient amounts and % Daily Value figures are omitted because a verified reference analysis has not been supplied for this listing.

Important Disclosures

  • Variety Disclaimer: Leaf color, growth, yield, and harvest timing vary with conditions. Heat tolerance does not guarantee summer production or prevent bolting.
  • Seed Storage: Store cool, dry, and dark, protected from heat and moisture.
  • Planting Zones: Choose local cool-season planting dates rather than relying on hardiness zone alone.

Recipe: Red Sails Apple and Walnut Salad

Freshly harvested Red Sails leaves pair with crisp apples and walnuts for a simple garden-to-table salad. Use grown lettuce, not the seeds in the packet.

Servings: 4 side salads. Preparation: 15 minutes. Cooking: None.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups harvested Red Sails lettuce leaves, loosely packed and torn
  • 1 medium red-skinned apple, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1/3 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon honey, optional
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions

  1. Wash your hands. Rinse the lettuce and apple under running water. Dry the lettuce thoroughly.
  2. Place lettuce, apple slices, and walnuts in a large serving bowl.
  3. Whisk the olive oil, vinegar, mustard, optional honey, salt, and pepper in a small bowl.
  4. Add half the dressing and toss gently. Add more to taste.
  5. Serve immediately so the leaves stay fresh and tender.

Make-ahead tip: Refrigerate clean, dry lettuce and dressing separately. Slice the apple and assemble just before serving. For a nut-free version, omit walnuts and check other ingredients for allergen suitability.
