Leek American Flag is a distinguished heirloom variety celebrated for its impressive stalk development and refined, mild flavor. This time-honored cultivar produces exceptionally long, tender stalks with a mild, sweet onion-like complexity that integrates beautifully into soups, stews, braises, and gratins. The hardy nature of American Flag leeks makes them an outstanding choice for gardeners in cooler climates or regions with temperature fluctuations — they can overwinter in mild areas and are among the most cold-tolerant alliums available to home gardeners.

Germination Rate: 85%. Test Date: 4/26. WILL.

Why Choose Leek American Flag?

  • Long, Impressive Stalks: Produces substantial white shanks with excellent length — the edible portion gardeners and chefs prize most.
  • Mild, Sweet Flavor: Refined onion-like taste with gentle sweetness that complements rather than dominates other ingredients.
  • Hardy & Cold-Tolerant: One of the most cold-hardy alliums available — can withstand frost and overwinter in mild climates for a late-season or early spring harvest.
  • Dual Season: Harvest in both spring and fall — versatile for extending your growing season.
  • Low Maintenance: Relatively undemanding once established — adapts well to most soil types with basic care.
  • Heirloom & Open-Pollinated: Passed down through generations for at least 75 years — save seeds year after year.
  • Non-GMO Seeds: Plants whose DNA has not been altered in ways that do not occur naturally through traditional breeding methods.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Sunlight: Full sun — at least 6 hours per day. Tolerates partial shade but produces best stalk length in full sun.
  • Soil: Loose, well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Amend generously with compost — leeks are heavy feeders.
  • Starting Indoors: Start seeds indoors 10–12 weeks before last frost. Leeks are slow to germinate — keep soil at 70–75°F for best results.
  • Transplanting: Transplant outdoors 4–6 weeks before last frost. Leeks are cold-tolerant and can go out early.
  • Spacing: Space transplants 6 inches apart in rows 12–18 inches apart.
  • Blanching: Hill soil up around stalks as they grow to blanch (whiten) the shank and extend the tender edible portion.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Consistent moisture produces the longest, most tender stalks.
  • Fertilizing: Side-dress with nitrogen-rich fertilizer every 3–4 weeks during active growth to support stalk development.
  • Harvesting: Harvest when shanks are at least ¾ inch in diameter. Loosen soil with a fork and pull — leeks can be left in the ground and harvested as needed.

  • Gratins: Layer blanched leeks in a baking dish with cream and Gruyère for an elegant gratin that showcases their mild sweetness.
  • Sautéed: Slice into rings and sauté in olive oil or butter until soft and golden — a simple, versatile side or topping.
  • Quiche & Tarts: Fold sautéed leeks into egg custard for a savory quiche filling with sophisticated flavor.
  • Raw in Salads: Slice tender young leeks thinly for a mild allium note in salads and vinaigrettes.
