Kale Premier, also known as Early Hanover Kale, is a time-tested heirloom valued for early maturity and dependable cool-season production. These non-GMO seeds produce abundant deep green leaves with a robust flavor suited to fresh and cooked dishes. Plants are slow to bolt and can remain productive 3–4 weeks longer than many competing varieties, extending the harvest window. Fall planting can provide excellent results, and established plants may overwinter where local conditions allow.

Germination Rate: 91%. Test Date: 2/26. TLM.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 75%

Why Choose Kale Premier?

  • Extended Harvest: Can remain productive 3–4 weeks longer than many competing kale varieties.
  • Early Maturity: Produces harvestable leaves early in the cool growing season.
  • Slow-Bolting: Well suited to cool conditions and extended spring or fall production.
  • Deep Green Leaves: Flavorful leaves work well in salads, sautés, soups, chips, and smoothies.
  • Reliable Production: A dependable choice for home gardens and market growers.
  • Heirloom and Open-Pollinated: Open-pollinated plants allow experienced gardeners to save properly isolated seed.
  • Non-GMO Seeds: Produced without genetic engineering.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Sunlight: Plant in full sun to partial shade. Afternoon shade can help in warmer conditions.
  • Soil: Use nutrient-rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5 and amend with finished compost.
  • Starting Seeds: Direct sow in early spring or fall, or start indoors 4–6 weeks before the last expected frost.
  • Spacing: Space plants 12–18 inches apart for airflow and full leaf development.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch helps moderate temperature and moisture.
  • Fertilizing: Apply balanced fertilizer at planting and side-dress according to label directions if growth slows.
  • Support: No staking is normally required because plants are self-supporting.
  • Harvesting: Pick outer leaves first while leaving the central growing point intact for continued production.
