Cucumber Slicing Straight Eight is a vigorous open-pollinated heirloom prized for its long, straight fruits that are ideal for slicing and fresh eating. Introduced in 1935 and an All-America Selections winner, this proven cultivar thrives in full sun or partial shade and produces high yields of uniform 8 inch cucumbers with excellent flavor and consistent quality. As a monoecious plant, it relies on bees, insects, or wind to pollinate its female flowers, which makes it an excellent choice for pollinator-friendly gardens. Harvest in about 70 days from planting.

Germination Rate: 85%. Test Date: 11/25. WILL.

Why Choose Straight Eight Cucumber?

  • Award-Winning Heritage: A 1935 All-America Selections winner that has stayed in gardens for ninety years for good reason.
  • Straight, Uniform Fruit: Reliably straight 8 inch cucumbers with deep green skin — beautiful on the plate and easy to slice.
  • High Yields: Vigorous vines produce heavily all season when picked regularly.
  • Adaptable: Performs in full sun or partial shade, forgiving of small mistakes and easy for first-time gardeners.
  • Heirloom & Open-Pollinated: Passed down through generations for at least 75 years — save your own seed year after year.
  • Non-GMO Seeds: Plants whose DNA has not been altered in ways that do not occur naturally through traditional breeding methods.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Sunlight: Full sun is best, at least 6 to 8 hours per day, though this variety tolerates partial shade.
  • Soil: Well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter with a pH of 6.0–6.8.
  • Planting: Direct sow after all frost danger has passed and soil temperatures reach 60–70°F. Can also be started indoors 3–4 weeks before transplanting.
  • Spacing: Sow 1 inch deep, 6 inches apart in rows 3–5 feet apart. Thin to 12 inches apart once seedlings emerge.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist. Water at the base to reduce foliar disease pressure.
  • Support: Train vines up a trellis or fence for straighter fruit, better air circulation, and easier picking.
  • Fertilizing: Side-dress with a balanced vegetable fertilizer when vines begin to run. Avoid excess nitrogen, which favors foliage over fruit.
  • Harvesting: Pick at about 8 inches while the skin is still deep green. Frequent harvest keeps the vines producing.
