Why Choose Purple Italian Globe Artichoke?
- Purple-Tinged Globe Buds: Grow rounded, attractive flower buds with rich purple coloring on the outer bracts.
- Edible Garden Harvest: Harvest the unopened flower buds for tender hearts and flavorful edible leaves.
- Heirloom Character: Add a traditional artichoke variety to a productive home vegetable garden.
- Long-Season Interest: Artichokes bring bold, architectural foliage and distinctive flower-bud harvests to the garden.
- Flexible Growing Habit: Grow as a perennial in suitable mild climates or as an annual where winters are cold.
Planting Tips for Success
- Choose Full Sun: Plant in a location with plenty of direct sunlight and room for mature plants to spread.
- Prepare the Soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil amended with compost. Artichokes perform best when their roots have consistent access to moisture without standing water.
- Start the Seeds: Sow according to the packet directions and your local planting calendar. If starting indoors, harden seedlings gradually before transplanting.
- Give Plants Space: Allow generous spacing so the foliage can develop good airflow and the flower buds are easy to reach.
- Water Consistently: Keep plants evenly watered during establishment, leaf growth, and bud development.
- Feed Thoughtfully: Side-dress with compost or a balanced vegetable fertilizer during active growth to support vigorous plants.
- Harvest at the Right Stage: Cut the main bud while it is firm and before the bracts begin to open. Smaller side buds can follow later.
- Protect in Cold Areas: In regions with freezing winters, use local growing guidance for overwintering or treat the crop as an annual.
