Monastrell Intermediate-Day Red Onion brings colorful bulbs and savory flavor to fresh meals, grilling, and roasting. This non-GMO hybrid is offered as pelleted seed for easier handling and more precise sowing. Its intermediate-day requirements fall between short-day and long-day onion types, so match planting dates and local day length to the variety. Harvest red onions for tonight's salad or roast wedges until their edges turn tender and caramelized. Choose 60, 80, 100, or 200 seeds.

Germination Rate: 85%. Test Date: 07/26. JSS.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 70%

Why Choose Monastrell Onions?

  • Intermediate-day selection: A useful option where seasonal day length supports this bulb-forming schedule.
  • Red onion color: Colorful bulbs add contrast to salads and composed plates; color changes during cooking.
  • Kitchen versatility: Use fresh slices, grilled rounds, or roasted wedges to suit your meals.
  • Pelleted seed: Coating makes small onion seeds easier to see, handle, and space.
  • Four packet sizes: Choose 60, 80, 100, or 200 seeds to fit your growing plan.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Choose local timing: Follow regional guidance for intermediate-day onions and allow time for plants to grow before bulbing begins.
  • Sow shallowly: Plant approximately 1/4 inch deep in fine, well-prepared soil or seed-starting mix.
  • Maintain germination moisture: Keep pellets evenly moist while the coating softens and seedlings emerge.
  • Provide sun and space: Grow in full sun and well-drained soil. Allow approximately 4 to 6 inches between plants for full-size bulbs; avoid deeply burying the neck when transplanting.
  • Water consistently: Keep soil evenly moist during active growth without waterlogging.
  • Feed moderately: Use mature compost and follow soil-test and fertilizer-label recommendations. Avoid excessive late nitrogen.
  • Support and harvest: Staking is unnecessary. Allow tops to fall naturally as bulbs mature, then harvest when conditions permit drying.
  • Cure carefully: Dry mature bulbs in a sheltered, well-ventilated area. Store only sound bulbs with dry necks and skins, inspect regularly, and do not assume a guaranteed storage period.

What Are Pelleted Seeds?

A coating gives seeds a more uniform shape for easier handling. Consistent moisture is important while pellets soften; pelleting does not guarantee emergence. Learn more about pelleted seeds.

  • Variety Disclaimer: Bulb size, color, maturity, yield, and storage performance vary with climate, soil, day length, and growing practices.
  • Hybrid Seed Note: Saved seed from hybrid plants does not reliably reproduce the parent variety.
  • Seed Storage: Keep unused pellets sealed, cool, dry, and away from sunlight. Seeds and coating are for planting, not eating.
  • Planting Zones: Intermediate-day suitability depends on local day length and planting timing; hardiness zone alone is not sufficient.

Balsamic-Roasted Monastrell Onion Wedges

Use harvested Monastrell onion bulbs, not seed-packet contents. Serves 4 as a side. Prep: 15 minutes. Cook: 35 to 45 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds harvested Monastrell red onions
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, or 1/3 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 400°F. Rinse onions, peel away papery skins, and trim dry root ends. Cut into 6 to 8 wedges per bulb, retaining a little clean base to help hold the layers together.
  2. Toss wedges with olive oil, thyme, salt, and pepper. Arrange in one layer on a rimmed baking sheet.
  3. Roast for 25 minutes, turning carefully once.
  4. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar and turn gently to coat. Roast for another 10 to 20 minutes, until tender and browned at the edges. Watch closely so the vinegar does not burn.
  5. Transfer to a serving platter, taste, and adjust seasoning. Serve warm.

Recipe Tips and Storage

Cut similar-sized wedges for even cooking. If edges brown before centers soften, cover loosely with foil for part of the cooking time. Refrigerate cooked leftovers within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F. Use within 3 to 4 days and reheat leftovers to 165°F. This is a roasted side dish, not a tested canning recipe.
