Why Choose Cherry Tomato Rainbow Mix?

  • Colorful Harvest: A mixture of varieties can bring contrasting colors to fresh salads and snack plates.
  • Varied Flavor: Individual varieties offer their own balance of sweetness, acidity, and texture.
  • Mixed Growth Habits: Determinate plants tend toward concentrated harvests, while indeterminate vines may keep growing and setting fruit in favorable conditions.
  • Kitchen Versatility: Use harvested cherry tomatoes fresh, roasted, or gently cooked into a quick sauce.
  • Heirloom Variety Mix: Open-pollinated varieties offer seed-saving potential with suitable isolation and selection, but saved seed will not recreate the original mix proportions.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Start Indoors: Sow about 6–8 weeks before your planned transplant date, approximately 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Keep evenly moist and provide bright light after emergence.
  • Harden Off: Introduce seedlings gradually to outdoor conditions and transplant after frost danger passes and soil warms.
  • Sun and Soil: Choose 6–8 hours of direct sunlight and fertile, well-drained soil amended with finished compost.
  • Plan for Variety: Since seedling growth habit may not be clear initially, allow room and support for vigorous plants. Do not assume every seedling is a compact container type.
  • Spacing: Allow approximately 24–36 inches between supported plants, with additional room where needed for airflow and access.
  • Support: Install cages, stakes, or trellises early. Support taller vines as they grow and help compact plants carry fruit-bearing branches.
  • Water and Mulch: Water consistently at soil level and mulch after soil warms to conserve moisture and reduce soil splash.
  • Fertilizing: Follow soil-test guidance and fertilizer label directions. Avoid excessive nitrogen that encourages foliage over fruit.
  • Pruning: Remove damaged foliage as needed. Avoid heavy pruning on determinate plants and retain healthy leaves to shade fruit.
  • Containers: Use large pots with drainage, quality potting mix, and suitable support. Monitor moisture frequently.
  • Harvest: Pick when each plant's fruit develops its mature color and yields slightly to gentle pressure. Maturity varies across the mix.

Rainbow Cherry Tomato Orzo Salad

Made with harvested tomatoes, not planting seeds. Use whichever ripe colors your plants produce. Serves 4–6 as a side. Preparation: 15 minutes. Cooking and cooling: approximately 20 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dry orzo pasta
  • 2 cups ripe mixed-color cherry tomatoes, washed and halved
  • 1 cup diced cucumber, washed
  • 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, washed, dried, and torn
  • 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Directions

  1. Cook orzo according to package directions. Drain, rinse briefly under cool water, and drain thoroughly.
  2. Whisk olive oil, lemon juice, pepper, and a small pinch of salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add cooled orzo, tomatoes, and cucumber, and toss gently.
  4. Fold in feta and basil. Taste before adding more salt because feta can be salty.
  5. Serve promptly or cover and refrigerate until serving.

Serving and Storage

Contains wheat and milk. Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F. Use within 3–4 days, preferably sooner for best texture.
