Bring thick, juicy tomato slices from the garden to your table with Tomato Beefsteak Determinate Tycoon. This Texas Superstar and San Antonio Rodeo tomato selection is valued for warm-weather performance and large, firm red beefsteak fruit that can weigh more than half a pound. Its determinate growth habit produces a bushier plant with a more concentrated harvest window, useful for fresh meals and batches of homemade sauce. Heat tolerance does not mean immunity to extreme temperatures; fruit set and yield still depend on conditions and care. Each packet contains 10 non-GMO hybrid seeds.

Germination Rate: 85%. Test Date: 2/26. PARA.

Why Choose Tycoon Beefsteak Tomato?

  • Texas Superstar Selection: A recognized tomato choice for Texas gardens and other suitable warm-season growing regions.
  • Determinate Habit: Bushier growth and a concentrated harvest window simplify crop planning, though fruit does not all ripen on the same day.
  • Large Red Fruit: Firm beefsteak tomatoes can weigh more than half a pound, providing substantial slices for sandwiches and baked dishes.
  • Warm-Weather Performance: Valued for heat tolerance, while still needing consistent moisture and suitable temperatures for fruit set.
  • Versatile Harvest: Enjoy ripe fruit fresh, roasted, grilled, or simmered into sauces.
  • Hybrid Variety: Grow a non-GMO hybrid selected for useful garden traits. Saved seed may not produce plants true to the parent variety.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Timing: Start indoors approximately 6–8 weeks before your intended transplant date. Harden off seedlings before planting outdoors after frost danger has passed and soil and nights have warmed.
  • Sowing: Sow about 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Keep evenly moist without waterlogging and provide bright light after emergence.
  • Sun and Soil: Choose full sun with 6–8 hours of direct light and fertile, well-drained soil amended with finished compost.
  • Spacing: Allow approximately 24–36 inches between supported plants and sufficient row space for airflow and access.
  • Transplanting: Plant healthy seedlings slightly deeper than they grew in their pots, removing leaves that would be buried.
  • Support: Install sturdy cages or stakes early to support branches carrying large fruit and keep tomatoes off the ground.
  • Watering: Water deeply and consistently at soil level. Mulch after the soil warms to help moderate moisture swings and reduce soil splash.
  • Fertilizing: Follow soil-test recommendations and fertilizer label directions. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages foliage at the expense of fruit.
  • Pruning and Monitoring: Remove damaged leaves as needed, but avoid heavy pruning of determinate plants. Inspect for pests and disease; resistance is not immunity.
  • Harvesting: The existing maturity estimate is approximately 80 days; actual timing varies with planting conditions. Pick fully colored fruit that yields slightly to gentle pressure.

  • Sauces: Simmer chopped ripe tomatoes with onion and seasonings, reducing liquid to your preferred consistency.
  • Grilled: Brush firm, thick slices with oil and grill briefly, turning carefully.

Garlic-Parmesan Baked Tycoon Tomatoes

Use harvested ripe Tycoon tomatoes for this savory side dish, not the planting seeds in the packet. Serves 4. Preparation: 10 minutes. Cooking: 15–20 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 large Tycoon tomatoes, approximately 1–1 1/2 pounds total
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/3 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 small garlic clove, finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, divided
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

  1. Heat the oven to 400°F. Lightly oil a rimmed baking dish.
  2. Wash tomatoes under running water and dry. Remove cores and cut into approximately 1/2-inch-thick rounds. Arrange in one layer in the baking dish.
  3. Brush tomato tops with olive oil. Mix Parmesan, breadcrumbs, garlic, 1 tablespoon parsley, salt, and pepper in a small bowl.
  4. Distribute the topping over the tomato rounds. Bake for 15–20 minutes until the tomatoes are tender and the topping is lightly golden. Watch closely near the end to avoid burning.
  5. Rest for 3 minutes, sprinkle with remaining parsley, and serve warm.

Serving and Storage

Serve with cooked beans, grilled chicken, or a simple pasta dish. Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F. Use within 3–4 days and reheat to 165°F. Contains milk and wheat unless suitable substitutes are used.
