Southern Pea Bush Knuckle Purplehull is a robust, heavy-yielding brown crowder pea, prized for its large, plump seeds — giving rise to the name "Knuckle Hull." This low, bushy plant produces 6 to 9-inch pods that develop at foliage level, transitioning from reddish-purple hues to brown when fully dried. Adorned with purple flowers, it serves excellently both as a dried pea and for canning purposes. Cowpeas, also known as Southern Peas, rank among the most productive and heat-tolerant legumes, available in diverse growth habits including bush, vine, tall, and short varieties. They play a valuable agricultural role by preventing soil erosion and suppressing weeds, while enriching soil nitrogen levels ahead of fall crops. Furthermore, they attract beneficial insects and thrive on poor soils, contributing significant organic matter. Additionally, cowpeas serve as nutritious animal fodder. This variety matures in approximately 65 days with a germination rate exceeding 80%. Our heirloom Non-GMO seeds support sustainable gardening practices and are packaged in environmentally and climate-friendly materials designed for reuse and recycling.

This is an heirloom seed, meaning it has been passed down from generation to generation for at least 75 years. As a rule, heirloom seeds taste better and will grow the same year after year.

These are also open pollinated meaning they will reproduce themselves. While all heirlooms are open pollinated not all open pollinated seeds are heirlooms.

Freshly Packed: These southern pea seeds are packed for the current growing season and will provide high germination rates next year as well.
