Medicinal Uses

Spearmint has a long history of traditional use in teas and other herbal preparations because of its refreshing aroma and flavor. This information describes traditional use only; it is educational, not medical advice, and does not claim to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition.

Growing Directions

  • Sunlight: Grow in full sun to partial shade, with more afternoon shade helpful in very hot climates.
  • Soil: Use moist, well-drained soil enriched with compost.
  • Sowing: Sow seeds lightly on the soil surface or cover them only lightly, then keep the growing medium evenly moist during establishment.
  • Spacing: Thin seedlings and give the plants room to branch, or grow them in a container to manage their spreading habit.
  • Watering: Water consistently, especially during hot or dry weather, without leaving the roots in standing water.
  • Pruning: Cut plants back in midsummer to help control expansion and encourage fresh, bushier growth.
  • Harvesting: Begin harvesting established leaves as needed, with a fuller harvest often possible in about 60 days under favorable conditions.
  • Containment: Use pots, raised beds, or a dedicated herb area to keep vigorous runners from moving into nearby garden space.

Fresh Spearmint Lemonade

Enjoy your garden harvest in a bright, refreshing lemonade with fresh spearmint aroma. This recipe uses harvested spearmint leaves, not the planting seeds in the packet.

Yield: 4 servings. Preparation: 10 minutes. Cooking: 3–5 minutes, plus cooling and chilling.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup loosely packed fresh spearmint leaves, washed, plus a few sprigs for garnish
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water for the syrup
  • 3/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 3 cups cold water
  • Ice and washed lemon slices, for serving

Directions

  1. Combine the sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat gently, stirring, for 3–5 minutes or until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Remove from the heat. Gently bruise the washed spearmint leaves, stir them into the warm syrup, and steep for 10 minutes.
  3. Strain out the leaves and let the syrup cool.
  4. Combine the lemon juice, mint syrup, and 3 cups cold water in a pitcher. Taste and add a little more water if desired.
  5. Refrigerate until chilled. Serve over ice with lemon slices and fresh spearmint sprigs.

Serving option: For a sparkling version, replace part of the cold water with chilled sparkling water just before serving.

Storage: Keep covered in the refrigerator and use within 3 days. Add ice and garnishes when serving so the lemonade stays fresh and undiluted.
