Why Choose Juliet Plum Tomato?

  • Small Oval Fruit: Conveniently sized tomatoes work well halved in salads or chopped for appetizers.
  • Versatile Flavor: Enjoy ripe fruit fresh or concentrate its flavor through roasting.
  • Indeterminate Growth: Supported vines can continue growing and setting fruit while conditions remain favorable.
  • Clustered Harvest: Fruit develops in clusters; cluster size and productivity depend on weather and care.
  • Non-GMO Hybrid: Hybrid breeding is distinct from genetic modification. Saved seed may not retain the parent variety's characteristics.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Start Indoors: Sow about 6–8 weeks before your planned transplant date, approximately 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Keep evenly moist and provide bright light after emergence.
  • Transplant: Harden seedlings off gradually, then plant outdoors after frost danger passes and soil warms.
  • Sunlight: Choose 6–8 hours of direct sunlight.
  • Soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil amended with finished compost. Soil testing can guide amendments.
  • Spacing: Allow approximately 24–36 inches between supported plants, with additional space where needed for airflow and access.
  • Support: Install a tall sturdy cage, stake, or trellis early and tie new growth loosely as vines develop.
  • Water and Mulch: Water consistently at soil level. Mulch after soil warms to conserve moisture and reduce soil splash.
  • Fertilizing: Follow soil-test recommendations and fertilizer label directions. Avoid excessive nitrogen that favors leaves over fruit.
  • Pruning: Remove damaged lower leaves and manage crowded growth while retaining healthy foliage to shade fruit.
  • Containers: Use a large pot with drainage, quality potting mix, and strong support. Check moisture frequently in hot weather.
  • Harvest: Pick when fruit is fully red and ripe. The existing approximate 60-day transplant-to-harvest estimate varies with growing conditions.

Juliet Tomato-Basil Bruschetta

Made with harvested tomatoes, not planting seeds. Serves 4 as an appetizer. Preparation: 15 minutes. Toasting: approximately 5–7 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups ripe Juliet tomatoes, washed and chopped
  • 8 baguette slices, each about 1/2 inch thick
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
  • 1 small garlic clove, finely minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, washed, dried, and torn
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 400°F. Brush bread lightly with 1 tablespoon olive oil and arrange on a baking sheet.
  2. Toast 5–7 minutes until lightly golden, watching closely.
  3. Meanwhile, combine chopped tomatoes, remaining olive oil, garlic, basil, salt, and pepper.
  4. Let the tomato mixture stand about 5 minutes, then taste for seasoning.
  5. Spoon onto toast just before serving to keep the bread crisp.

Serving and Storage

Contains wheat when made with standard baguette. Store tomato topping separately from bread. Refrigerate perishable leftovers within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F, and enjoy within 1–2 days for best texture.
