Heatmaster Determinate Tomato offers deep red, globe-shaped slicing tomatoes on bushy plants that grow approximately 4 feet tall. Fruit typically weighs about 7–8 ounces, with a versatile size for sandwiches, salads, and fresh salsa. Selected for heat tolerance, Heatmaster is an option for warm-weather gardens, though extreme heat can still affect flowering and fruit set. Each packet contains 10 non-GMO hybrid seeds.

Germination Rate: 85%. Test Date: 4/26. WILL.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 75%

Why Choose Heatmaster Tomato?

  • Heat-Tolerant Selection: A useful choice for warm growing conditions, without a guarantee of fruit set during temperature extremes.
  • Determinate Habit: Bushy plants offer a more compact growth habit than vigorous indeterminate vines and tend toward a concentrated harvest.
  • Classic Red Slicers: Globe-shaped fruit of approximately 7–8 ounces fits fresh sandwiches and garden salads.
  • Kitchen Versatility: Dice ripe tomatoes for salsa, slice for burgers, or cook into fresh sauces.
  • Non-GMO Hybrid: Produced through controlled crossing. Saved hybrid seed may not reproduce the parent variety's characteristics; purchase fresh seed for consistent varietal traits.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Start Indoors: Sow approximately 6–8 weeks before your planned transplant date, about 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Keep evenly moist and provide bright light after emergence.
  • Transplant: Harden seedlings off gradually. Plant outdoors after frost danger passes and soil and nights have warmed. For a fall crop, follow your local planting calendar and allow time before frost.
  • Sun and Soil: Provide 6–8 hours of direct sunlight and fertile, well-drained soil amended with finished compost.
  • Spacing: Allow approximately 24–36 inches between plants with enough row space for airflow and harvest access.
  • Support: Install sturdy cages or stakes early. Even compact determinate plants benefit from support when bearing fruit.
  • Water and Mulch: Water consistently at soil level. Mulch after soil warms to conserve moisture and reduce soil splash.
  • Fertilize: Follow soil-test recommendations and fertilizer label directions. Avoid excessive nitrogen that favors foliage over fruit.
  • Pruning: Avoid heavy pruning of determinate plants. Retain healthy foliage to shade fruit and remove damaged leaves as needed.
  • Warm-Weather Care: Monitor soil moisture closely during hot spells. Heat tolerance does not eliminate stress from extreme temperatures or dry roots.
  • Harvest: Pick fruit when fully red and slightly yielding to gentle pressure. Timing, plant height, fruit size, and yield vary with growing conditions.

Fresh Heatmaster Tomato Salsa

Use ripe, harvested Heatmaster tomatoes, not the planting seeds. Makes approximately 3 cups. Preparation: 15 minutes, plus optional chilling. No cooking required.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds ripe Heatmaster tomatoes, washed, cored, and finely diced
  • 1/2 cup finely diced white onion
  • 1 small jalapeño, stemmed and finely minced; remove seeds and membranes for less heat
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro, washed and dried
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice, plus more to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Tortilla chips and lime wedges for serving, optional

Directions

  1. For a less watery salsa, let diced tomatoes drain in a strainer for 5 minutes without pressing.
  2. Combine tomatoes, onion, jalapeño, and cilantro in a bowl. Wash hands and utensils after handling the pepper and avoid touching your eyes.
  3. Stir in lime juice and salt. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  4. Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate for 20–30 minutes to blend flavors. Stir before serving with tortilla chips or spooning over tacos.

Serving and Storage

This is fresh refrigerated salsa, not a canning recipe or a shelf-stable product. Refrigerate promptly in a covered container and use within 3–4 days. Do not leave out longer than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. Check tortilla chip labels for allergens if serving.
