Muir Summer Crisp Pelleted Lettuce is a Batavian variety with densely formed heads and extra-wavy light-green leaves. Crisp texture, heat tolerance, and a slow-bolting habit support fresh harvests in suitable warmer conditions. Cut a head, chop its frilled leaves on your cutting board, and toss with apple and cranberries for a refreshing salad. These non-GMO, open-pollinated pelleted seeds come in 60, 80, 100, or 200 counts. Heads mature in approximately 60 days under favorable conditions.

Germination Rate: 98%. Test Date: 8/26. JSS.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 80%

Pelleted seeds are coated for easier handling and precision placement. Learn more about pelleted seeds.

Why Choose Muir Pelleted Lettuce?

  • Warm-season performance: Heat tolerance helps extend production during suitable warmer periods.
  • Slow bolting: A slower transition to flowering can support a useful harvest window.
  • Crisp Batavian texture: Dense heads and extra-wavy light-green leaves bring satisfying crunch.
  • Flexible growing: Suitable for garden beds, raised beds, containers, and hydroponic systems when growing needs are met.
  • Visible pellets: Coating helps with careful placement and spacing.
  • Downy Mildew: High resistance to EU races 16–26, 28, and 32, and US races 5–9.
  • Other resistance: High resistance to Lettuce Leaf Aphid (Nasonovia ribisnigri) and Tomato Bushy Stunt Virus; intermediate resistance to Lettuce Mosaic Virus.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Season: Plan spring or fall crops with local calendars, using heat tolerance to extend harvests where conditions allow.
  • Light: Provide sun and airflow. Afternoon protection can reduce stress during very hot weather.
  • Soil: Prepare fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.
  • Sowing: Follow packet depth guidance and cover lightly. Keep pellets consistently moist during germination so coating breaks down; do not allow them to dry out.
  • Spacing: Thin or transplant for the intended harvest size, following packet spacing guidance. Give mature heads enough room and airflow rather than crowding plants.
  • Water: Maintain even moisture without waterlogging.
  • Fertilizer: Apply balanced vegetable fertilizer according to label directions and soil needs.
  • Support and care: No trellis or staking is needed. Weed gently around shallow roots and monitor for pests.
  • Harvest: Pick useful-size young leaves or cut mature heads at approximately 60 days, before bolting. Refrigerate promptly.

Muir Apple-Cranberry Crunch Salad

Frilled light-green leaves pair with crisp apple, celery, cranberries, and pecans in a quick cider dressing. Serves 4 as a side. Prep time: 20 minutes. No cooking required with ready-to-eat toasted pecans.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups chopped harvested Muir lettuce
  • 1 large crisp apple, cored and diced
  • 2 celery stalks, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup dried cranberries
  • 1/3 cup ready-to-eat toasted pecans, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup, optional
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

  1. Discard damaged lettuce leaves, rinse under running water, and spin or pat dry. Rinse apple and celery before cutting.
  2. Chop lettuce, core and dice apple, and thinly slice celery.
  3. Whisk olive oil, cider vinegar, mustard, optional maple syrup, salt, and pepper.
  4. Combine lettuce, apple, celery, and cranberries. Toss gently with enough dressing to lightly coat.
  5. Scatter pecans over the top and serve immediately with remaining dressing alongside.

Options and Storage

Omit pecans for a nut-free version, or use pear instead of apple. Keep washed lettuce, prepared ingredients, and dressing refrigerated separately until serving; cut apple near serving time. Refrigerate leftovers promptly. Do not leave prepared salad at room temperature longer than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F.
