What Are Pelleted Seeds?
Pelleted seeds have a coating that makes them easier to handle and space. Keep the seedbed evenly moist while the coating breaks down and seedlings emerge. Learn more about pelleted seeds.
Planting Tips for Success
- Timing: Direct sow during locally suitable cool-season planting windows.
- Depth: Sow about 1/2 inch deep. Water well and keep the seed zone moist without waterlogging or allowing a hard crust.
- Soil: Prepare loose, well-drained soil with finished compost. Remove stones and hard clods.
- Spacing: Thin to about 3–4 inches apart with 12–18 inches between rows. Packet size does not change plant spacing.
- Sun and weeds: Choose full sun where possible and remove competing weeds early.
- Water: Maintain consistent soil moisture as roots develop.
- Fertilizer: Follow soil-test guidance and fertilizer labels. Avoid excess nitrogen that favors tops over roots.
- Support: No stakes or trellises are needed for the root crop.
- Harvest: Lift roots carefully at your preferred tender size. Harvest greens lightly, leaving foliage to support root growth.
