Why Choose Cherokee Green Tomatoes?
- Distinctive Color: A green-fruited heirloom brings contrast to tomato plates and salads. Assess ripeness by a slight yield to gentle pressure as well as changes in skin tone.
- Complex Flavor: Tangy acidity, mild sweetness, and savory depth work beautifully in simple fresh dishes.
- Generous Beefsteak Fruit: Medium to large tomatoes, often 8 ounces or more, provide substantial slices and wedges.
- Indeterminate Habit: Supported vines can keep growing and setting fruit when temperatures and plant health permit.
- Heirloom and Open-Pollinated: Grow a non-GMO variety whose seed can be saved with suitable isolation and selection to maintain its characteristics.
Planting Tips for Success
- Start Indoors: Sow about 1/4 inch deep approximately 6–8 weeks before your planned transplanting date. Keep the growing mix evenly moist and provide warmth and bright light.
- Transplanting: Harden off seedlings gradually and plant outdoors after frost danger passes and soil and nights are warm. Remove leaves that would be buried when planting stems deeper.
- Sun and Soil: Choose full sun with 6–8 hours of direct light and fertile, well-drained soil amended with finished compost.
- Spacing: Space supported plants approximately 24–36 inches apart, with enough row space for ventilation and harvest access.
- Support: Install tall stakes, a sturdy trellis, or heavy-duty cages early. Tie stems loosely as vines grow and support branches carrying heavy fruit.
- Watering: Water consistently at soil level. Mulch after soil warms to moderate moisture swings and reduce soil splash.
- Fertilizing: Follow soil-test recommendations and fertilizer label directions. Avoid excessive nitrogen that favors foliage over fruit.
- Pruning and Care: Train vines to suit the support system and remove damaged foliage without stripping away fruit-shading leaves. Monitor regularly for insects and disease.
- Harvesting: The existing maturity estimate is approximately 70–80 days from transplanting; timing varies with conditions. Harvest mature fruit that yields slightly to gentle pressure rather than waiting for an overall red color.
