Grow Yellow Granex onion plants for sweet onions with large, semi-flat bulbs and rounded shoulders. Enjoy your harvested onions sliced into salads, blended into salad dressings, or cooked into everyday favorites. Sweetness and final bulb size depend on your soil, climate, and growing conditions.
This short-day variety is associated with sweet-onion growing regions, including Maui, Hawaii, and the Tyler, Texas area, where it is known as the “Noonday Onion.” Plan to enjoy your harvest fresh: storage is approximately 1–2 months under suitable conditions, rather than the longer storage period of Red Creole.
Why Choose Yellow Granex Onion Plants?
- 50 plants per package: Start your onion patch with young plants rather than sowing seed.
- Sweet flavor: Enjoy harvested bulbs fresh in sandwiches and salads or use them in homemade salad dressings.
- Large, semi-flat bulbs: Grow yellow onions with rounded shoulders for slicing, grilling, roasting, and caramelizing. Final bulb size depends on growing conditions.
- Short-day variety: Match planting time to your local short-day onion growing schedule.
- Fresh-eating harvest: Plan for approximately 1–2 months of storage under suitable conditions and use damaged bulbs promptly.
Planting Tips for Success
- Timing: Follow local extension guidance for short-day onion transplants and plant promptly after arrival.
- Sun and soil: Choose a sunny location with loose, fertile, well-drained soil.
- Spacing: Space plants approximately 4–6 inches apart, leaving room between rows for tending.
- Water: Maintain even moisture during active growth without waterlogging the roots.
- Feeding: Fertilize according to soil needs and label directions; avoid excessive nitrogen as bulbs swell.
- Care: Weed gently around shallow roots and avoid piling soil over developing bulbs. Staking is generally unnecessary.
- Harvest: Judge readiness as tops naturally fall and begin drying. Cure harvested bulbs in a dry, shaded, airy location.

Skillet-Caramelized Yellow Granex Onions
Turn your harvested Yellow Granex onions into a rich, golden topping for burgers, sandwiches, or roasted vegetables. Use mature harvested onion bulbs, not the young plants supplied for planting.
Serves: 4 as a topping. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook: 35–50 minutes.
Ingredients
- 2 large harvested Yellow Granex onion bulbs, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 2–4 tablespoons water, as needed
Directions
- Heat olive oil and butter in a wide skillet over medium-low heat.
- Add sliced onions and salt. Stir to coat, then spread into an even layer.
- Cook gently for 35–50 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until soft and deeply golden. Reduce heat if the onions darken too quickly.
- Add water a tablespoon at a time whenever browned bits collect on the pan. Stir to loosen them, keeping the onions from scorching.
- Season with pepper and serve warm.
Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container within 2 hours and use within 3–4 days.
