- Deep-red flat-globe bulbs: Add distinctive color to your harvest and fresh market display, with size potential of approximately 3 inches.
- Intermediate-day variety: Match your planting schedule to local intermediate-day onion guidance. Bulb size and performance vary by region.
- Let it finish: Allow plants to reach full maturity so Red Candy Apple can finish developing its bulbs.
Planting Tips for Success
- Timing: Follow local extension guidance for intermediate-day onion transplants and plant promptly after arrival. The shipping estimate is not a universal planting date.
- Sun and soil: Choose full sun and loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Raised beds can help where drainage is poor.
- Planting and spacing: Set roots into the soil with the growing point above ground. Space plants approximately 4–6 inches apart, leaving room between rows for tending.
- Water: Maintain even moisture during active growth without waterlogging the roots.
- Feeding: Fertilize according to soil needs and label directions. Avoid using extra nitrogen indiscriminately, particularly late in bulb development.
- Care: Weed gently around shallow roots and avoid piling soil over developing bulbs. Staking is generally unnecessary.
- Harvest and curing: Allow bulbs to mature and harvest when tops naturally fall and begin drying. Cure in a dry, protected, well-ventilated location until necks and outer skins are dry.
- Storage: Store cured bulbs with good airflow and check regularly. The listed storage potential is 2–3 months under suitable conditions; use damaged bulbs promptly.

Skillet-Caramelized Red Candy Apple Onions
Turn harvested Red Candy Apple onions into a rich topping for burgers, sandwiches, or roasted vegetables. Use mature harvested bulbs, not the young plants supplied for planting.
Serves: 4 as a topping. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook: 35–50 minutes.
Ingredients
- About 1 pound harvested Red Candy Apple onion bulbs, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 2–4 tablespoons water, as needed
Directions
- Heat olive oil and butter in a wide skillet over medium-low heat.
- Add sliced onions and salt. Stir to coat, then spread into an even layer.
- Cook gently for 35–50 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until soft and deeply golden with muted burgundy tones. Reduce heat if onions darken too quickly.
- Add water a tablespoon at a time whenever browned bits collect on the pan. Stir to loosen them, keeping onions from scorching.
- Season with pepper and serve warm.
Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container within 2 hours and use within 3–4 days.
