Grow Candy intermediate-day onions for sweet flavor and a rewarding homegrown harvest. Candy is one of our most popular and recommended varieties, especially for gardeners who have struggled with onions before. Its strong root system and disease resistance help it establish in the garden. Picture pulling your own mature bulbs, slicing them for a fresh sandwich, or slowly caramelizing them into a golden skillet topping. Each package contains 50 young onion plants for planting, not seeds or harvested bulbs.

  • Yellow, Globe Shape, Sweet, Hybrid
  • Intermediate Day
  • Size Potential: 6″
  • Storage Potential: 3 months
  • Days to Harvest: 90-100

Why Choose Candy Onion Plants?

  • 50 plants per package: Start your onion patch with young plants rather than sowing seed.
  • Sweet flavor: Enjoy harvested Candy onions fresh in salads and sandwiches or cooked into savory dishes.
  • Strong establishment: Candy is known for its strong root system and disease resistance, although no variety is immune to growing problems.
  • Intermediate-day variety: Candy is an intermediate-day onion, not a long-day variety. It performs across many onion-growing regions, but the southernmost short-day areas and northernmost long-day areas may be less suitable. Match your planting schedule to local conditions.
  • Early planting in northern regions: Plant as early as local conditions safely allow so plants have time to develop before bulbing.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Timing: Follow local extension guidance for intermediate-day onion transplants and plant promptly after arrival. The shipping estimate is not a universal planting date.
  • Sun and soil: Choose full sun and loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Raised beds can help where drainage is poor.
  • Planting and spacing: Set roots into the soil with the growing point above ground. Space plants approximately 4–6 inches apart, leaving room between rows for tending.
  • Water: Maintain even moisture during active growth without waterlogging the roots.
  • Feeding: Fertilize according to soil needs and label directions; avoid excessive nitrogen as bulbs swell.
  • Care: Weed gently around shallow roots and avoid piling soil over developing bulbs. Staking is generally unnecessary.
  • Harvest and curing: Harvest when tops naturally fall and begin drying. Cure bulbs in a dry, protected, well-ventilated location until necks and outer skins are dry. Store with good airflow and remove soft or damaged bulbs promptly.

Skillet-Caramelized Candy Onions

Turn your harvested Candy onions into a rich, golden topping for burgers, sandwiches, or roasted vegetables. Use mature harvested onion bulbs, not the young plants supplied for planting.

Serves: 4 as a topping. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook: 35–50 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 large harvested Candy onion bulbs, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 2–4 tablespoons water, as needed

Directions

  1. Heat olive oil and butter in a wide skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Add sliced onions and salt. Stir to coat, then spread into an even layer.
  3. Cook gently for 35–50 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until soft and deeply golden. Reduce heat if the onions darken too quickly.
  4. Add water a tablespoon at a time whenever browned bits collect on the pan. Stir to loosen them, keeping the onions from scorching.
  5. Season with pepper and serve warm.

Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container within 2 hours and use within 3–4 days.
