Toma Verde Tomatillo is an early, prolific heirloom that produces abundant flat-round green fruits inside papery husks. The plants are well suited to containers, garden plots, raised beds, and fields, and they tolerate heat and dry spells while setting a heavy crop. Grow at least two plants for reliable cross-pollination and fruit set, then harvest fresh tomatillos for bright salsa verde, roasting, sauces, and other flavorful dishes.

Germination Rate: 96%. Test Date: 7/26. TLM.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 75%

Why Choose Toma Verde Tomatillo?

  • Early production: Enjoy an earlier harvest of green tomatillos for fresh summer cooking and salsa verde.
  • Prolific fruiting: Plants set heavily and produce abundant flat-round fruits throughout the growing season.
  • Heat and dry-spell tolerance: Toma Verde performs well in warm gardens and can keep producing through periods of challenging weather with proper care.
  • Versatile growing habit: Grow this adaptable tomatillo in containers, raised beds, garden plots, or larger field plantings.
  • Authentic salsa verde flavor: Harvest bright, tangy fruit that is excellent fresh, roasted, or cooked into sauces.
  • Heirloom and open-pollinated: Grow a time-tested variety and save seeds from mature fruit for future gardens according to best seed-saving practices.
  • Non-GMO seeds: Grow plants from seed that has not been genetically modified.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Sunlight: Plant in full sun, providing at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light per day for vigorous growth and fruit production.
  • Soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil with added organic matter when possible. A soil pH around 6.0 to 7.0 supports strong growth.
  • Planting: Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost date. Transplant after soil temperatures reach about 60°F and nighttime temperatures remain above 50°F.
  • Spacing: Space plants about 18 to 24 inches apart. Grow at least two tomatillo plants for reliable cross-pollination and fruit set.
  • Containers: Choose a large container with drainage holes, quality potting mix, and enough room for the plant's root system and support.
  • Watering: Water consistently while plants establish. Once established, plants tolerate some dry weather, but even moisture supports flowering and fruit development.
  • Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced fertilizer at transplant, then follow the product label as plants grow and begin flowering. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can favor leaves over fruit.
  • Support: Stake or cage plants because the branches can become heavy with fruit and benefit from support.
  • Harvesting: Harvest when the husks fill and begin to loosen, and the fruits are firm and green. Pick regularly to encourage continued production.
