Bean Pole Rattlesnake is a visually distinctive heirloom pole bean celebrated for its striking bicolor pods and reliable productivity. The vigorous vines produce abundant green pods dramatically streaked and mottled with deep purple — a distinctive appearance that makes these beans instantly recognizable at harvest and on the plate. Rattlesnake beans deliver excellent flavor and texture, tender when harvested at the snap stage with a mild, slightly sweet bean flavor and firm bite. At full maturity, the beans shell out to reveal cream-colored seeds with burgundy markings, making them equally attractive as dry beans for storage and winter cooking. The variety matures reliably in 65-70 days, enabling succession planting in most growing regions.

Germination Rate: 80%. Test Date: 2/26. WILL.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 70%.

Why Choose Rattlesnake Pole Bean?

  • Heirloom Seed: Passed down through generations for at least 75 years for reliable harvests.
  • Non-GMO Seeds: Plants whose DNA structure has not been altered in ways that do not occur naturally through traditional breeding methods.
  • Easy to Grow: Minimal special care, simple conditions, and little risk of failure to germinate and thrive. These seeds are forgiving of small mistakes and can produce results with just basic gardening tools and common sense.
  • Dual Purpose: Harvest young for snap beans or let mature for beautiful dried beans with burgundy-marked seeds — two crops in one planting.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Planting Depth: Sow seeds 1 inch deep directly in the garden after the last frost date when soil temperatures reach at least 60°F.
  • Spacing: Plant seeds 4-6 inches apart in rows 24-36 inches apart.
  • Sun: Full sun — at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Watering: Water consistently, about 1 inch per week. Avoid overhead watering to reduce disease risk.
  • Support: Provide a trellis, fence, or sturdy pole at least 6-8 feet tall. Rattlesnake vines are vigorous climbers that reward solid support with maximum yield.
  • Fertilizing: Beans fix their own nitrogen — avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers. A balanced starter fertilizer at planting is sufficient.
  • Harvest: Pick snap pods at 6-8 inches when still firm and tender. For dry beans, allow pods to fully mature and dry on the vine before shelling.

Cooking Methods

  • Fresh/Raw: Snap off ends and enjoy raw in salads — the purple streaks add beautiful color to fresh dishes.
  • Steaming: Steam 4-6 minutes for tender beans. Note: the purple streaks will fade to green with heat, but flavor remains excellent.
  • Sautéing: Sauté in olive oil or butter with garlic for a quick, flavorful side dish.
  • Stir-Frying: Excellent in stir-fries — quick high heat preserves texture and mild sweetness.
  • Drying: Allow pods to fully mature on the vine, then shell and store dried beans for soups, stews, and winter cooking.
  • Blanching & Freezing: Blanch 2-3 minutes, cool in ice water, and freeze for up to 12 months.
