Why Choose Chocolate Cherry Tomato?

  • Complex Flavor: Rich, tangy cherry tomatoes bring depth to fresh salads and lightly cooked dishes.
  • Distinctive Color: Dark red-brown fruit adds contrast alongside red and golden tomatoes.
  • Indeterminate Growth: Vines can provide repeated harvests when temperatures and growing conditions support fruit set.
  • Kitchen Versatility: Use bite-sized fruit for snacking, roasting, appetizers, and quick sauces.
  • Open-Pollinated Seed: Gardeners interested in seed saving can select mature fruit and use suitable isolation practices to maintain variety characteristics.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Start Indoors: Sow about 6–8 weeks before your planned transplant date, approximately 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Keep evenly moist and provide strong light after emergence.
  • Transplant: Harden off seedlings gradually and plant outdoors after frost danger passes and soil warms.
  • Sun and Soil: Choose 6–8 hours of direct sunlight and fertile, well-drained soil amended with finished compost.
  • Spacing: Allow approximately 24–36 inches between supported plants, with more room where needed for airflow and access.
  • Sturdy Support: Install a tall cage, stake, or trellis early. Tie new vine growth loosely as plants grow.
  • Water and Mulch: Water consistently at soil level. Mulch after soil warms to conserve moisture and reduce soil splash.
  • Fertilizing: Use soil-test guidance or follow tomato fertilizer label directions. Avoid excessive nitrogen that favors foliage over fruit.
  • Pruning: Remove damaged lower leaves and manage crowded growth without stripping protective foliage from fruit.
  • Containers: Use a large container with drainage holes, quality potting mix, and strong support. Check moisture frequently in hot weather.
  • Harvest: Pick when fruit develops its dark red-brown ripe color and yields slightly to gentle pressure. The listing's approximate 70-day transplant-to-harvest guidance varies with conditions.

Roasted Chocolate Cherry Tomato and Ricotta Toast

Made with harvested tomatoes, not planting seeds. Serves 4 as an appetizer. Preparation: 10 minutes. Cooking: approximately 25 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ripe Chocolate Cherry tomatoes, washed, with about half cut into halves
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 8 baguette slices, each about 1/2 inch thick
  • 3/4 cup ricotta cheese
  • 2 tablespoons torn fresh basil, washed and dried

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 400°F. Place tomatoes in a baking dish and toss with 1 tablespoon olive oil, salt, and pepper.
  2. Roast 20–25 minutes until softened and juicy, with some fruit still holding its shape.
  3. Brush baguette slices lightly with remaining olive oil. Toast on a separate baking sheet during the final 5–7 minutes, watching closely.
  4. Spread ricotta over warm toast. Spoon roasted tomatoes and a little pan juice over each slice.
  5. Finish with torn basil and serve promptly.

Serving and Storage

Contains wheat and milk. Store tomatoes and ricotta separately from bread for best texture. Refrigerate perishable leftovers within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F, and use within 3–4 days. Assemble fresh toast just before serving.
