Pelleted Seed Lettuce Romaine Monte Carlo is a compact, mid-season romaine variety with a distinctive whorl-forming leaf structure. Its uniform dark green plants develop attractive savoyed foliage and dense heads that can be harvested at mini size for tender leaves or allowed to mature slightly larger for fuller heads with creamy, flavorful centers. This conventional seed receives NOP-compliant pelleting for easier handling and precision seeding. Monte Carlo carries strong resistance to Downy Mildew EU races 16, 19, 21, and 23. These non-GMO, heirloom pelleted seeds are available in four sizes: 60, 80, 100, or 200 seeds.

Germination Rate: 89%. Test Date: 7/26. JSS.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 80%

Why Choose Monte Carlo Pelleted Romaine?

  • Compact Romaine Growth: Monte Carlo forms neat, uniform plants that fit well in garden beds, raised beds, containers, and succession plantings.
  • Distinctive Savoyed Foliage: The dark green, textured leaves create an attractive head with a satisfying fresh crunch.
  • Flexible Harvest Size: Harvest mini heads early for tender leaves or allow plants to mature for fuller heads with creamy centers.
  • Strong Disease Resistance: Monte Carlo carries strong resistance to Downy Mildew EU races 16, 19, 21, and 23.
  • Mid-Season Performance: Dense heads develop quickly, giving gardeners useful flexibility in harvest timing.
  • Precision-Friendly Pellets: The coated seeds are easier to see and space, with NOP-compliant pelleting for careful planting.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Choose the Right Season: Sow for spring or fall harvests, following local planting calendars for the best timing.
  • Provide Sunlight: Grow in a sunny location with good airflow. In hot conditions, afternoon protection can help keep leaves tender.
  • Prepare the Soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, and keep the seedbed free of weeds.
  • Plant Carefully: Place pelleted seeds at the depth recommended on the packet, then cover lightly and avoid burying them too deeply.
  • Space for Heads: Thin or transplant seedlings so each compact romaine head has room to develop and airflow can reach the foliage.
  • Keep Moisture Even: Water consistently so the soil stays evenly moist but not waterlogged, especially while seedlings are establishing.
  • Feed as Needed: Start with fertile soil and apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer according to label directions when plants need additional nutrition.
  • Harvest at Your Preferred Size: Cut mini heads early or harvest fuller heads once the centers have developed and leaves remain crisp.
