Why Choose Sierra Blanca Onions?
- Large white bulbs: Thick, tender rings and mild flavor suit everyday meals.
- Short-day variety: Choose regions and planting schedules suited to short-day onion production.
- Pelleted seed: The coating makes small seeds easier to see and place precisely.
- Fresh-market quality: Enjoy crisp onions fresh or cooked; this variety is best used promptly rather than held for long-term storage.
- Recognized variety: Sierra Blanca was previously marketed as Super Star and is an All-America Selections Winner.
Planting Tips for Success
- Choose the timing: Follow local short-day onion planting guidance. Day length and planting season matter more than hardiness zone alone.
- Start or direct sow: Sow approximately 1/4 inch deep in fine, well-prepared soil or seed-starting mix.
- Sun and soil: Provide full sun, fertile well-drained soil, and good airflow.
- Keep moisture consistent: Maintain steady moisture while pellets soften and seedlings emerge, then water evenly without waterlogging.
- Space carefully: Allow approximately 4 to 6 inches between plants grown for full-size bulbs. Avoid deeply burying the neck when transplanting.
- Feed thoughtfully: Use mature compost and fertilize according to soil-test results and label directions. Avoid excessive nitrogen late in the season.
- Support and harvest: Staking is unnecessary. Harvest mature bulbs as tops naturally begin to fall or dry, dry them in a sheltered airy place, and use this fresh-market variety promptly.
What Are Pelleted Seeds?
A coating creates a more uniform seed shape for easier handling. Keep pellets consistently moist during germination; pelleting does not guarantee emergence. Learn more about pelleted seeds.

Grilled Sierra Blanca Onion Rounds with Lime and Parsley
Use harvested Sierra Blanca bulbs, not seed-packet contents. Serves 4 as a side. Prep: 15 minutes. Cook: 12 to 18 minutes.
Ingredients
- 2 large harvested Sierra Blanca onions, approximately 1 1/2 pounds total
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
- 2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley
- Lime wedges for serving, optional
Directions
- Wash onions, remove papery skins, and trim ends. Cut crosswise into rounds approximately 1/2 inch thick, keeping the concentric layers together.
- Heat a clean grill to medium heat. Brush both sides of the onion rounds with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
- Place rounds in a grill basket or on a grill pan to prevent loose rings from falling through the grate.
- Grill for approximately 6 to 9 minutes per side, turning carefully with a wide spatula, until tender with browned grill marks. Reduce heat if edges char before centers soften.
- Transfer to a platter, drizzle with lime juice, and scatter with parsley. Serve warm with optional lime wedges.
Recipe Tips and Storage
A stovetop grill pan works well if an outdoor grill is unavailable; ventilate the kitchen and adjust heat as needed. Refrigerate cooked leftovers in a covered container within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F. Use within 3 to 4 days and reheat leftovers to 165°F. This is a cooked side dish, not a tested canning recipe.
