Planting Tips for Success
- Start indoors: Sow approximately 6 to 8 weeks before your last expected frost. Keep the seed-starting mix evenly moist and provide bright light after emergence.
- Harden seedlings: Introduce plants gradually to outdoor conditions before transplanting after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed.
- Choose sun and good soil: Select full sun and fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Plant deeply to encourage roots along the buried stem.
- Provide support: Install a sturdy cage, stake or trellis at planting. Give plants enough space for airflow and access to the harvest.
- Water consistently: Water at the soil line, keeping moisture even rather than alternating very dry and saturated conditions. Mulch to help retain moisture.
- Fertilize thoughtfully: Follow soil-test recommendations or the label of a tomato fertilizer. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages leaves at the expense of fruit.
- Harvest gently: Pick fully colored fruit often. The tomatoes are soft and tender, so handle carefully and use promptly.

Roasted Matt's Wild Cherry Tomato and Basil Pasta
Make this dish with harvested tomatoes, not the planting seeds in the packet. Serves 4. Prep: 10 minutes. Cooking: 20 to 25 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ripe Matt's Wild cherry tomatoes, washed; leave most whole and halve a few
- 12 ounces spaghetti or your preferred pasta
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus salt for pasta water
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup loosely packed fresh basil leaves, torn
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice, optional
- Grated Parmesan, optional, for serving
Directions
- Heat the oven to 400°F. In a shallow baking dish, toss tomatoes with olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper.
- Roast for 15 to 20 minutes, until softened and some tomatoes have burst. Check early because these small fruits cook quickly; keep all the flavorful juices.
- Meanwhile, cook pasta in salted boiling water according to package directions. Reserve 1/2 cup pasta water before draining.
- Toss the pasta with roasted tomatoes and their juices. Add reserved pasta water a tablespoon at a time to create a light sauce.
- Fold in basil and optional lemon juice. Taste, adjust seasoning and serve with optional Parmesan.
Options and storage: Omit Parmesan for a dairy-free dish and choose gluten-free pasta if needed. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours in a covered container and use within 3 to 4 days. Reheat thoroughly with a splash of water.
