Stowell's Evergreen White Sweet Corn is a traditional heirloom with large ears of tender, creamy white kernels. This packet contains 200 treated, non-GMO heirloom seeds. The variety is described in the existing listing as producing 8–9 inch ears with 16–18 kernel rows on vigorous plants around 8 feet tall. Its extended milk stage gives gardeners a useful picking window, but harvested ears should still be eaten or processed promptly for best quality.

Treated planting seed only: The seeds in this packet are fungicide-treated. Do not eat them or use them for feed or oil. The recipe below uses harvested sweet corn, never the treated seeds.

Germination Rate: 85%. Test Date: 10/25. WILL.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 75%.

Why Choose Stowell's Evergreen White Sweet Corn?

  • Classic heirloom: A long-established open-pollinated white sweet corn for traditional garden harvests.
  • Large white-kernel ears: Enjoy plump, tender kernels fresh on the cob or cut into favorite dishes.
  • Extended milk stage: Check developing ears regularly to make the most of the variety's picking window.
  • Versatile harvest: Use freshly harvested ears for creamed corn, grilling, or properly prepared frozen corn.
  • Tall growth: Vigorous plants need ample garden space and good pollination.
  • Treated, non-GMO seed: Fungicide treatment is intended to protect planting seed; follow the packet's handling and planting directions.

Planting Tips for Success

  • When to sow: Direct sow after frost danger has passed and soil reaches about 60°F. Treatment does not replace suitable planting conditions.
  • Sunlight and soil: Provide 6–8 hours of direct sunlight and fertile, well-drained soil amended with compost.
  • Depth and spacing: Sow 1–2 inches deep, then thin to 10–12 inches apart in rows 30–36 inches apart.
  • Pollination: Plant a block of at least four short rows rather than one long row for better pollen distribution.
  • Isolation: Keep other corn varieties from shedding pollen at the same time nearby. Use variety-appropriate distance or flowering-time separation, not planting dates alone.
  • Watering: Maintain even moisture, especially during tasseling, silking, and ear fill. Adjust watering for rainfall and soil type.
  • Fertilizing: Corn is a heavy feeder. Follow soil-test recommendations and fertilizer labels for initial feeding and side-dressing.
  • Support: Choose a sheltered site for tall stalks and avoid disturbing shallow roots while weeding.
  • Harvest: Check once silks brown. Pick when kernels are plump and release milky juice when pressed; chill or prepare promptly.

Creamed Stowell's Evergreen White Sweet Corn

Use fresh harvested white sweet corn kernels, never the treated seeds in this packet. Serves 4. Prep: 15 minutes. Cook: 12–15 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups fresh harvested white sweet corn kernels, from about 5–6 ears
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives, optional

Directions

  1. Remove husks and silk from harvested ears and rinse under running water. Cut kernels carefully from the cobs into a deep bowl.
  2. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add kernels and cook for 3 minutes, stirring.
  3. Add cream, milk, salt, and pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer, lower the heat, and cook 8–12 minutes, stirring often, until kernels are tender and sauce lightly coats them.
  4. For a thicker texture, mash a small portion of the corn against the pan and stir it back in. Add a splash of milk if needed.
  5. Taste, adjust seasoning, and sprinkle with optional chives. Serve warm.

Options: Add a pinch of smoked paprika or stir in a little grated Parmesan at the end. Frozen food-grade corn kernels can substitute when garden corn is unavailable.

Storage: Refrigerate in a shallow covered container within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F. Use within 3–4 days and reheat to 165°F.
