Herb Cumin Black 500 Non-GMO, Heirloom Seeds v bo
Black Cumin (Nigella sativa), also known as nigella or kalonji, offers a rewarding garden-to-kitchen harvest of small, aromatic black seeds. This is nigella, not ordinary cumin (Cuminum cyminum), so its flavor and culinary uses should not be treated as interchangeable. Grow it for a distinctive spice to scatter over homemade flatbread, add to savory baking, or use sparingly in vegetable dishes. Picture opening mature, dry seed capsules over your cutting board, gathering the dark seeds, and adding a little of your own harvest to warm bread fresh from the skillet. The seed-bearing capsules make harvest time an interesting part of growing this culinary herb. Plant in a sunny, well-drained spot, allow the crop to mature fully, and dry and clean harvested seeds carefully before storing them for kitchen use. These non-GMO, heirloom seeds are sold for planting, not as ready-to-eat spice.
Germination Rate: 76%. Test Date: 1/26. TLM.
Texas minimum germination standard: None.
Culinary Uses
- Flatbread and Savory Baking: Sprinkle food-grade harvested nigella seeds over flatbreads or mix a small quantity into savory dough.
- Vegetable Dishes: Use modest amounts in cooked vegetables and other savory dishes for a distinctive aromatic accent.
- Spice Blends: Incorporate into recipes that specifically call for nigella or kalonji; do not substitute automatically for ordinary cumin.
- Harvested Spice: Use mature, clean, fully dried seeds harvested from plants grown for food, never planting seeds from this packet.
Medicinal Uses
Nigella has a history of traditional herbal use, but this listing makes no therapeutic claims. This product is sold as planting seed for a culinary crop, not a medicine, supplement, or treatment. Do not use it to replace professional medical advice.
Growing Directions
- Choose the Site: Select a sunny location with well-drained soil. Avoid persistently wet ground.
- Plan Locally: Follow packet instructions and local seasonal guidance for sowing dates and suitable growing temperatures.
- Sow Carefully: Follow packet directions for planting depth and spacing, keeping the seedbed consistently moist during germination without waterlogging it.
- Thin and Weed: Allow plants room to develop and remove competing weeds gently while seedlings establish.
- Water as Needed: Monitor soil moisture and water at the base rather than keeping mature foliage and capsules continually wet.
- Fertilize Sensibly: Improve soil as needed and apply fertilizer only according to its label and the needs of your soil.
- Provide Support: If stems lean in exposed conditions, use light support without crowding the plants.
- Let Seeds Mature: Allow capsules to mature and dry; harvest before they release their seed. Maturity varies with weather and growing conditions.
- Dry and Clean: Finish drying harvested capsules in a dry, ventilated place. Open them, separate the seeds from capsule material, and store only thoroughly dry, clean seeds.
- Container Growing: Choose a pot with drainage and room for roots, and monitor moisture more frequently than in garden beds.

Simple Nigella Skillet Flatbread
Use food-grade Nigella sativa seeds harvested from mature culinary plants, or purchased culinary nigella. Do not use the planting seeds in this packet.
Yield: 4 small flatbreads. Prep: 15 minutes. Rest: 15 minutes. Cooking: 12–16 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour, plus extra for shaping
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup plain yogurt
- 1 tablespoon olive oil, plus a little for brushing
- 2–4 tablespoons water, added as needed
- 1 teaspoon food-grade nigella seeds
Directions
- Mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Stir in yogurt and olive oil.
- Add water a tablespoon at a time until a soft dough forms. Knead gently for about 2 minutes, then cover and rest for 15 minutes.
- Divide into four pieces. On a lightly floured surface, roll each into a round about 1/8 inch thick.
- Divide nigella seeds over the rounds and press them lightly into the surface with a rolling pin.
- Heat a heavy skillet over medium heat. Cook one flatbread at a time for 1 1/2–2 minutes per side, adjusting heat as needed, until browned in spots and cooked through with no raw dough in the center.
- Brush lightly with olive oil if desired. Keep warm under a clean towel and serve with soups, vegetables, or dips.
Kitchen Tip: Start with a small amount of nigella for an aromatic accent. Use baking powder, not baking soda, for this recipe.
Storage: Cool and refrigerate in a covered container within 2 hours. Use within 3 days, or freeze for up to 2 months. Rewarm before serving.
Allergy Note: Contains wheat and milk. Avoid if allergic to nigella and check ingredient labels for other allergens.
