Why Choose Orange King Bell Peppers?

  • Exceptional Size and Shape: Large, blocky fruit with thick walls provides plenty of usable pepper for fresh eating and cooking.
  • Sweet, Mild Flavor: Crisp and naturally sweet when ripe, with a versatile flavor for everyday meals.
  • High Yield: Productive plants provide an abundant harvest throughout the growing season.
  • Heirloom Seed: Passed down through generations for at least 75 years for dependable, consistent harvests.
  • Non-GMO Seeds: Produced without genetic modification.
  • Easy to Grow: Suitable for raised beds, containers, and in-ground gardens with basic care.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Starting Indoors: Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep in a warm seed-starting mix.
  • Soil Temperature: Peppers germinate best when soil temperatures are between 75-85°F. A heat mat can help improve germination.
  • Transplanting: Move seedlings outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures stay above 55°F.
  • Spacing: Space plants 18-24 inches apart, with rows 24-36 inches apart, for good air circulation and full fruit development.
  • Sunlight: Plant in full sun with at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.
  • Watering: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Deep, consistent watering supports strong roots and helps reduce stress during fruit development.
  • Support: Stake or cage plants as they grow to support heavy fruit loads and prevent branches from breaking.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer at transplanting, then use a lower-nitrogen fertilizer once flowering begins to support fruit set.
  • Harvesting: Peppers can be harvested green, but allow them to mature fully on the plant for the sweetest flavor and brightest orange color.

Recipe: Roasted Orange King Pepper and Garlic Pasta

Turn harvested Orange King bell peppers into a sweet, savory pasta dish with roasted edges, golden garlic, and fresh parsley. This recipe uses peppers grown from your plants, not the planting seeds in this packet.

Servings: 4. Prep: 15 minutes. Cook: 25 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 3 large ripe Orange King bell peppers, washed, cored, seeded, and cut into strips
  • 12 ounces dry penne pasta
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more for the pasta water
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional
  • 1/3 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese, plus extra for serving
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup reserved pasta cooking water, as needed

Directions

  1. Heat the oven to 425°F. Toss pepper strips with 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and black pepper on a rimmed baking sheet. Spread in a single layer.
  2. Roast for 20 to 25 minutes, turning once, until tender with lightly browned edges.
  3. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook penne according to the package directions until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup cooking water before draining.
  4. Heat the remaining tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced garlic and cook for 1 to 2 minutes until fragrant and just lightly golden, stirring often. Add optional red pepper flakes; do not let the garlic burn.
  5. Add the roasted pepper strips and drained penne to the skillet. Toss with Parmesan and 1/4 cup reserved pasta water, adding a little more water as needed to coat the pasta.
  6. Remove from heat, stir in parsley and lemon juice, and adjust seasoning to taste. Serve hot with extra Parmesan.

Options and Storage

Add cooked white beans for a heartier meal, or use a dairy-free Parmesan alternative. Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container within 2 hours and use within 3 to 4 days. Reheat leftovers to 165°F, adding a splash of water to loosen the pasta.
