Grow sunny color and sweet flavor with Pepper Specialty Sweet Marconi Golden. This non-GMO Italian heirloom produces elongated, tapered peppers approximately 6–8 inches long, ripening from green to golden-yellow. Thick, meaty walls make the fruit useful for roasting, grilling, stuffing, and slicing fresh. Plants reach approximately 24–30 inches tall, with harvests listed at 70–85 days after transplanting under suitable conditions. This packet contains 100 seeds.

Germination Rate: 63%. Test Date: 10/25. TLM.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 55%

Why Choose Sweet Marconi Golden?

  • Golden Harvest: Allow green peppers to ripen yellow for colorful meals and sweet flavor.
  • Meaty Walls: Substantial flesh works well in roasted strips, grilled pieces, and stuffed halves.
  • Long Fruit: Approximately 6–8-inch tapered peppers are easy to cut into strips for everyday cooking.
  • Sweet Flavor: Choose this sweet pepper when you want pepper flavor rather than the heat of hot varieties.
  • Heirloom and Open-Pollinated: Save seed from properly isolated plants to help preserve variety characteristics.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Starting: Sow approximately 1/4 inch deep indoors 8–10 weeks before your last expected frost. Provide steady warmth and bright light after emergence.
  • Transplanting: Harden seedlings off gradually. Transplant after frost danger has passed and soil has warmed to approximately 65°F.
  • Sunlight: Provide at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Soil: Choose fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost.
  • Spacing: Allow approximately 18–24 inches between plants for branching and airflow.
  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist without waterlogging. Adjust watering for rainfall, temperature, and soil conditions; mulch helps conserve moisture.
  • Fertilizing: Follow soil-test recommendations and fertilizer label directions. Avoid excessive nitrogen that favors leaves over fruit.
  • Support: Stake or cage plants to support branches carrying long, heavy peppers.
  • Harvesting: Snip fruit with clean pruners. Pick green if preferred or allow golden-yellow color to develop. Maturity and yield vary with growing conditions.
  • Containers: Use a roomy container with drainage holes and monitor moisture frequently during hot weather.

Roasted Marconi Golden Peppers with Garlic and Capers

Use harvested Sweet Marconi Golden peppers, not the planting seeds in this packet. Makes 4 side-dish servings. Prep: 10 minutes. Roast: 20–25 minutes. Total: 30–35 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 4 large ripe Sweet Marconi Golden peppers
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 2 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 1 tablespoon drained capers
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 425°F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper rated for that temperature.
  2. Rinse and dry peppers. Remove stems, seed cores, and pale ribs. Cut lengthwise into strips about 1 inch wide.
  3. Toss strips with 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil, salt, and black pepper. Spread in a single layer on the baking sheet.
  4. Roast 15 minutes. Mix garlic with the remaining 1/2 tablespoon oil and stir into the peppers. Roast another 5–10 minutes, until tender with lightly browned edges, watching so the garlic does not burn.
  5. Transfer to a serving platter. Toss with capers, lemon juice, and parsley. Taste before adding more salt, since capers are salty. Serve warm with cooked grains, beans, or sandwiches.

Storage and Safety

Refrigerate leftovers in a shallow covered container within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F. Keep at 40°F or below and use within 3–4 days. Reheat leftovers to 165°F. This garlic-and-oil preparation is not shelf-stable; do not store at room temperature or use as a canning recipe.
