Perkins Long Pod Okra is a Southern heirloom that brings vigorous growth and abundant bright green pods to the summer garden. Plants grow approximately 5 feet tall, producing elongated, ridged pods that can reach about 8 inches. Harvest young while the pods are tender rather than waiting for their maximum size. Enjoy your harvest in soups, stews, gumbo, roasted side dishes, and tested preserving recipes. Packet contains 100 non-GMO heirloom seeds.

Why Choose Perkins Long Pod Okra?

  • Long green pods: Distinctive elongated pods provide useful kitchen harvests when picked young and tender.
  • Vigorous growth: Approximately 5-foot plants suit sunny garden beds with room for harvesting access.
  • Southern heirloom: A traditional open-pollinated variety for gardeners who appreciate familiar summer crops.
  • Kitchen versatility: Use young pods in roasted dishes, gumbo, soups, and skillet meals.
  • Seed-saving potential: Open-pollinated plants can provide seed for future seasons when properly isolated to maintain variety purity.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Sunlight: Choose full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct light daily.
  • Soil: Prepare fertile, well-drained ground with compost. Avoid sites that remain waterlogged.
  • Sowing: Direct sow after frost danger has passed and soil has warmed to at least 65–70°F. An overnight soak can help soften the seed coat. Plant about 1 inch deep.
  • Spacing: Thin to 18–24 inches between plants, with approximately 3 feet between rows for airflow and picking.
  • Watering: Water deeply during establishment and dry weather. Keep moisture consistent without saturating the roots.
  • Fertilizing: Follow soil-test recommendations or the fertilizer label. Avoid excess nitrogen, which can favor leaves over pods.
  • Support: Stake plants if wind or heavy growth causes leaning.
  • Harvesting: Check plants frequently and pick young pods, generally around 3–4 inches, while they are still tender. Remove tough oversized pods to encourage continued production. Wear gloves if plant hairs irritate your skin.

  • Fry: Coat young sliced pods with seasoned cornmeal for classic Southern-style fried okra.
  • Grill: Lightly oil whole young pods and turn over a hot grill until tender and lightly charred.
  • Preserve: Follow tested freezing, pickling, or pressure-canning directions. Do not improvise a shelf-stable brine or canning process.

Lemon-Garlic Roasted Perkins Long Pod Okra

Use tender harvested pods from your garden, not the planting seeds in the packet. Serves 4 as a side. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook: 15–20 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound young Perkins Long Pod okra
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • ¼ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice, plus wedges for serving

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 425°F. Lightly oil a large rimmed baking sheet.
  2. Rinse the okra under running water and dry thoroughly. Trim stem ends and halve pods lengthwise. Cut a few into thick rounds if desired.
  3. Toss okra with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Spread in one layer, leaving space between pieces.
  4. Roast for 10 minutes. Turn the okra, add the garlic, and roast 5–10 minutes longer until tender with browned edges. Watch the garlic so it does not burn.
  5. Toss with lemon zest and juice. Serve warm with lemon wedges.

Kitchen tip: Use tender young pods and a roomy pan. Roast in batches rather than crowding the vegetables.

Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F. Use within 3–4 days and reheat thoroughly.
