Planting Tips for Success
- Timing: Follow local short-day onion planting guidance; in warm regions, start seed ahead of fall transplanting for a spring harvest.
- Sun: Give plants a sunny spot with at least 6 to 8 hours of light where possible.
- Soil: Prepare fertile, loose, well-drained soil and incorporate finished compost before planting.
- Sowing: Sow seeds about ¼ inch deep. Transplant sturdy seedlings when local conditions are suitable.
- Spacing: Set transplants approximately 4 to 6 inches apart with room between rows.
- Water: Keep moisture even during active growth, then reduce watering as tops fall near harvest.
- Feeding: Feed moderately during leafy growth and avoid excess nitrogen as bulbs begin to swell.
- Harvest and cure: Lift bulbs as tops fall and dry; cure in a dry, airy location before storage.

Skillet-Caramelized Texas 1015Y Onions
Serves: 4 as a topping. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook: 30 to 40 minutes. Use harvested Texas 1015Y onion bulbs, not the seeds in the packet.
Ingredients
- 2 large harvested Texas 1015Y onions, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- ¼ teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 2 to 3 tablespoons water, as needed
- Optional: 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar and freshly ground black pepper
Directions
- Peel and thinly slice the onions. Heat the olive oil and butter in a wide skillet over medium-low heat.
- Add the onions and salt. Cook slowly, stirring every few minutes, for 30 to 40 minutes until deeply golden and soft. Lower the heat if they brown too quickly.
- Add a tablespoon of water whenever browned bits collect on the pan; stir to loosen them without burning the onions.
- If using balsamic vinegar, stir it in during the final minute. Season to taste and serve warm on burgers, sandwiches, roasted vegetables, or toast.
Refrigerate leftovers promptly in a covered container and use within 3 to 4 days.
