Fruit Rhubarb Seeds
Grow a garden favorite for homemade pies, crumbles and sauces with rhubarb seeds from David's Garden Seeds®. Though often treated as a fruit in the kitchen, rhubarb is a vegetable grown for its fleshy leaf stalks. Its pleasantly tart flavor pairs beautifully with strawberries and other sweet fruits.
Why Grow Rhubarb?
- Garden-to-kitchen versatility: Use harvested stalks in compotes, baked desserts and tangy sauces.
- Perennial potential: In suitable cool climates, established plants can return for multiple seasons.
- Start from seed: Raise your own young plants and allow time for sturdy crowns to develop. Seed-grown plants can vary in stalk color and vigor; green stalks are not necessarily unripe.
Planting Tips for Success
- Match your climate: Rhubarb performs best with cold winters and mild summers. Long, hot summers can limit perennial success; in warmer parts of Texas, gardeners may grow it as a cool-season annual instead.
- Start carefully: Follow the variety's packet directions for sowing depth and timing. Keep the seed-starting mix evenly moist, not saturated, and provide strong light after germination.
- Prepare a lasting home: Choose fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Give plants room for their broad leaves and mature crowns.
- Manage moisture and heat: Water during dry periods and mulch around plants without covering the crown. Afternoon shade can help in warmer locations.
- Build strong crowns: Remove flower stalks as they appear and avoid harvesting during the first growing season when establishing a perennial planting.
Harvest and Kitchen Safety
Eat only the leaf stalks. Rhubarb leaves are toxic and must not be eaten. Remove and discard the leaves before preparing stalks. Once perennial plants are well established, harvest modestly, leaving plenty of foliage to support the crown. Stop harvesting stressed plants and allow them to recover.
