Why Choose Cucumber Pickling National?

  • Classic pickling variety: A proven choice for home gardeners who want crisp, uniform cucumbers for preserving.
  • Pickle-ready size: Smooth skin and 3–4 inch fruit are well suited to whole or spear pickles.
  • Dual-purpose harvest: Enjoy the mild flavor fresh in salads, relish trays, and snacks.
  • Fast maturity: Produces a useful harvest in approximately 50–55 days.
  • Adaptable performance: Vigorous vines and dependable fruiting support harvests across varied garden conditions.
  • Open-pollinated heirloom: A traditional variety that can be saved for future plantings.
  • Non-GMO seed: Preserves the variety through traditional breeding rather than genetic modification.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Choose full sun with at least 6–8 hours of direct light each day.
  • Direct sow after the last frost when soil temperatures reach at least 65°F, or start indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost and transplant carefully.
  • Plant seeds about 1 inch deep and 6–8 inches apart in rows 36–48 inches apart. In hills, space hills 3–4 feet apart with 2–3 plants per hill.
  • Grow in rich, well-drained soil with a pH around 6.0–7.0. Mix compost into the bed before planting.
  • Water deeply and consistently, keeping the soil evenly moist. Uneven moisture can lead to bitter fruit and blossom drop.
  • Apply a balanced fertilizer at planting, then side-dress when vines begin to run if additional nutrition is needed.
  • Train vines onto a trellis or fence to improve airflow, reduce disease pressure, and make harvesting easier.
  • Harvest at 3–4 inches for the best pickling quality. Pick frequently because oversized fruit can slow new production.
  • Inspect plants for cucumber beetles, squash bugs, and powdery mildew, and remove damaged leaves promptly.
