Why Choose Better Boy Tomatoes?
- Large Red Slicers: Broad slices make a satisfying addition to sandwiches and burgers.
- Fresh Tomato Flavor: Enjoy ripe fruit in simple dishes with herbs and olive oil.
- Indeterminate Habit: Vines can continue growing and setting fruit when conditions remain suitable.
- Versatile Harvest: Chop for bruschetta, toss into salads, or simmer into sauces.
- Non-GMO Hybrid: Produced through controlled crossing. Saved seed may not reproduce Better Boy's characteristics; use fresh hybrid seed for consistent varietal traits.
Planting Tips for Success
- Start Indoors: Sow approximately 6–8 weeks before your planned transplant date, about 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Keep evenly moist and provide bright light after emergence.
- Transplant: Harden seedlings off gradually. Move outdoors after frost danger passes and soil and nights have warmed.
- Sun and Soil: Choose 6–8 hours of direct sunlight and fertile, well-drained soil amended with finished compost.
- Spacing: Allow approximately 24–36 inches between supported plants and ample row space for airflow and harvest access.
- Strong Support: Install tall cages, stakes, or a trellis early. Secure stems loosely and support branches carrying heavy fruit.
- Water and Mulch: Water consistently at soil level and mulch after soil warms to moderate moisture swings and reduce soil splash.
- Fertilize: Follow soil-test recommendations and fertilizer label directions. Avoid excessive nitrogen that favors leaves over fruit.
- Pruning: Train vines to their support and remove damaged foliage as needed. Retain healthy leaves to shade fruit.
- Containers: If growing in a container, choose a large, well-drained container with substantial support and monitor moisture closely.
- Harvest: Pick when fruit is fully red and yields slightly to gentle pressure. Fruit size, harvest timing, and yield vary with conditions.

Fresh Better Boy Tomato Bruschetta
Use ripe, harvested Better Boy tomatoes, not the planting seeds. Makes 12 toasts, approximately 4 appetizer servings. Preparation: 15 minutes. Cooking: 8–10 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ripe Better Boy tomatoes, washed, cored, and diced
- 12 baguette slices, approximately 1/2 inch thick
- 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
- 1 small garlic clove, finely minced
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil, washed and dried
- 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Directions
- Heat oven to 400°F. Let diced tomatoes drain in a strainer for about 5 minutes without pressing.
- Arrange bread on a baking sheet and brush with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Bake 8–10 minutes until lightly golden, turning once.
- Combine drained tomatoes with garlic, basil, remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil, salt, and pepper.
- Spoon tomato mixture onto the warm toasts immediately before serving to keep bread crisp.
Serving and Storage
Serve as an appetizer or alongside soup. Store tomato topping and bread separately for best texture. Refrigerate topping within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F, and enjoy within 1–2 days. Contains wheat when made with standard baguette; check bread labels for other allergens.
