Bring garden-fresh flavor to your table with Floradade Slicing Tomato, a determinate, open-pollinated variety offered here in a packet of 100 non-GMO, heirloom seeds. Its flavorful 5 to 7-ounce tomatoes are useful for sandwiches, salads, salsa, and homemade bruschetta. Bushy plants deliver a concentrated harvest, with the current listing noting approximately 77 days to maturity. Floradade is a warm-climate choice, but even heat-tolerant tomatoes need consistent moisture and protection from severe stress.

Why Choose Floradade Tomatoes?

  • Fresh slicing quality: Medium-size fruits offer a convenient size for sandwiches, salads, and sharing at the table.
  • Determinate growth: Bushy plants produce a concentrated crop that makes planning a harvest easier.
  • Warm-climate appeal: Floradade is valued for heat tolerance, although extreme heat can still affect flowering and fruit set.
  • Open-pollinated variety: Gardeners can save seed from suitable ripe fruit when plants are appropriately isolated from other varieties.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Start indoors: Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep, approximately 6 to 8 weeks before your intended transplant date. Keep the seed-starting mix warm and evenly moist, not waterlogged.
  • Transplant carefully: Harden seedlings off gradually and transplant after frost danger has passed and the soil has warmed.
  • Choose a sunny location: Use fertile, well-drained soil and allow approximately 24 to 36 inches between plants for airflow and access.
  • Support early: Install a sturdy cage or stake at planting. Determinate plants still benefit from support; avoid heavy pruning that removes productive branches.
  • Water and feed consistently: Water at the soil level and mulch to moderate moisture changes. Use fertilizer according to a soil test or label directions, avoiding excessive nitrogen.
  • Plan for your climate: In hot-summer regions, time spring or fall plantings around local frost dates and heat. Harvest when fruits develop their mature color and yield slightly to gentle pressure.

Floradade Tomato-Basil Bruschetta

Use ripe harvested Floradade tomatoes for this fresh garden appetizer. The seed packet contains planting seeds, not recipe ingredients. Makes approximately 12 toasts, serving 4 to 6. Prep: 15 minutes. Toasting: 6 to 8 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups diced ripe Floradade tomatoes, about 3 medium tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil
  • 1 small garlic clove, finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar, optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 12 baguette slices, about 1/2 inch thick

Directions

  1. Wash tomatoes under running water before cutting. Rinse basil and pat dry. Heat the oven to 400°F.
  2. Dice the tomatoes. If particularly juicy, let them drain in a strainer for 5 minutes.
  3. Combine tomatoes, basil, garlic, 1 tablespoon olive oil, optional vinegar, salt, and pepper. Let stand for 10 minutes while preparing the bread.
  4. Brush bread lightly with the remaining tablespoon of oil. Place on a baking sheet and toast for 6 to 8 minutes, until lightly crisp.
  5. Spoon the tomato mixture onto the warm toast just before serving.

Recipe Tips and Storage

For a softer garlic flavor, use half a clove. Keep the topping and toast separate until serving to prevent sogginess. Refrigerate leftover tomato topping in a covered container within 2 hours, or within 1 hour when temperatures exceed 90°F, and use within 2 days. This is a fresh recipe, not a tested canning recipe.
