Bolero Pelleted Carrot brings sweet, crisp orange Nantes-type roots to your garden and kitchen. This non-GMO hybrid develops cylindrical, slightly tapered roots with blunt tips, typically about 7–8 inches long. Enjoy them fresh, roasted, or stored under suitable cool conditions. Pelleting makes the small seeds easier to see and place. Choose 60, 80, 100, or 200 seeds. Approximate maturity is 75 days, depending on growing conditions.

Germination Rate: 91%. Test Date: 6/26. JSS.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 55%

Why Choose Bolero Pelleted Carrot?

  • Visible, easier-to-handle seeds: Pelleted coating helps with deliberate placement of tiny carrot seeds, though thinning may still be needed.
  • Nantes-type roots: Orange roots with blunt tips offer crisp texture for snacking, shredding, and cooking.
  • Storage potential: Sound, properly harvested roots can be kept under suitable cold, humid storage conditions; storage life varies.
  • Four packet sizes: Select the seed count that suits your bed or succession-planting plan.
  • Non-GMO hybrid: Bolero is a hybrid variety; saved seed may not reproduce the same characteristics.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Direct sow: Sow approximately 1/4 inch deep in the final growing location. Carrots generally do best without transplanting.
  • Seedbed: Prepare loose, well-drained soil deep enough for full-length roots. Remove stones and break up clods that can distort roots.
  • Pellet moisture: Water thoroughly after sowing and keep the seed zone consistently moist while pellets break down and seedlings establish. Avoid a hard soil crust.
  • Spacing: Thin seedlings to about 2–3 inches apart, with roughly 12–18 inches between rows. Allow room to weed without disturbing roots.
  • Light and season: Choose full sun and plan sowing for mild weather using local planting guidance. Excessive heat can affect establishment and quality.
  • Water and weeds: Water evenly as roots develop. Remove weeds early and gently; avoid damaging shallow young roots.
  • Fertilizing: Use soil-test guidance and follow fertilizer labels. Avoid excessive nitrogen and fresh manure near the crop.
  • Harvest and storage: Check root size before lifting, loosen soil carefully, and remove tops for storage. Keep sound roots cold and humid without letting them freeze.

Important Disclosures

  • Variety Disclaimer: Root size, shape, sweetness, yield, and maturity vary with soil, weather, and growing practices. Photos are illustrative.
  • Seed Storage: Keep pelleted seeds cool, dry, and protected from light and humidity. Plan to use them promptly rather than assuming multi-year storage performance.
  • Planting Zones: Planting dates depend on local temperatures and seasons, not hardiness zone alone. Consult local extension guidance.
  • Planting seed only: Do not eat the seeds or pelleted coating. The recipe below uses harvested carrot roots.

Garlic-Thyme Roasted Bolero Carrots

A savory side dish made with harvested carrots. Serves 4. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook: 25–35 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound harvested Bolero carrots, scrubbed and trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, or 1/3 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 425°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment rated for that temperature, or lightly oil the pan.
  2. Quarter carrots lengthwise, cutting thicker pieces further if needed so they cook evenly.
  3. Toss with olive oil, thyme, salt, and pepper. Spread in one layer.
  4. Roast for 20 minutes, turning once. Toss with the minced garlic and roast another 5–15 minutes, until fork-tender with lightly browned edges. Watch the garlic to prevent burning.
  5. Serve warm. Refrigerate leftovers promptly in a covered container and use within 3–4 days.
