Brussels Sprouts Long Island Improved stands as the preeminent heirloom variety in North American cultivation, with over a century of proven performance and widespread commercial adoption. These non-GMO seeds produce vigorous, upright plants reaching 20–28 inches tall, each stem yielding abundant, densely-packed sprouts measuring 1–1.25 inches in diameter. Long Island Improved sprouts develop a refined, slightly sweet flavor with subtle cabbage undertones and minimal bitterness — making them exceptionally appealing to both experienced gardeners and those new to brassica cultivation. Matures in 90–100 days; plants are capable of producing up to 100 sprouts per stalk over an extended harvest window.

  • Prolific Producer: Up to 100 sprouts per plant over an extended harvest window — exceptional yield for home gardens.
  • Frost-Sweetened Flavor: Slightly sweet, mild cabbage flavor that deepens and sweetens beautifully after light frost exposure.
  • Exceptional Disease Resistance: Vigorous plants with proven adaptability across diverse growing regions and climates.
  • Open-Pollinated Heirloom: Save seeds year after year for consistent, reliable results season after season.
  • Non-GMO & Sustainable: Grown sustainably with eco-friendly, recyclable packaging.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Sunlight: Full sun — at least 6 hours per day for best sprout development.
  • Soil: Rich, well-drained, loamy soil with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Amend with compost before planting.
  • Planting: Start indoors 6–8 weeks before last spring frost, or 12–14 weeks before first fall frost for a fall harvest. Transplant outdoors when seedlings are 4–6 inches tall.
  • Spacing: Space plants 18–24 inches apart in rows 24–36 inches apart to ensure good air circulation.
  • Watering: Water deeply and consistently; keep soil evenly moist. Mulch to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced nitrogen-rich fertilizer at transplant; side-dress with additional nitrogen 4 weeks after transplanting to support heavy sprout production.
  • Support: Mound soil around the base of plants as they grow to prevent wind rock on these tall, top-heavy plants.
  • Harvesting: Begin harvesting from the bottom of the stalk upward when sprouts reach 1–1.25 inches. Allow light frosts to sweeten flavor before final harvest. Plants can produce through multiple light frosts in Zones 7–9.
