Black Krim Tomato adds rich flavor and striking color to the home garden. This non-GMO heirloom beefsteak produces flattened, slightly ribbed fruit with dusky maroon-purple skin and characteristic green shoulders. Tomatoes typically weigh approximately 8–12 ounces, with juicy, meaty flesh and a complex flavor often described as rich, smoky, and subtly salty. Slice a ripe tomato for a sandwich or combine wedges with white beans and basil for a satisfying garden salad. Its indeterminate vines need sturdy support and can keep growing and setting fruit when conditions permit. Each packet contains 100 seeds.

Why Choose Black Krim Tomatoes?

  • Distinctive Color: Dusky maroon-purple fruit with green shoulders brings visual interest to sliced tomato plates and salads. Color varies with growing conditions.
  • Rich Flavor: Juicy flesh offers a complex taste that shines in simple fresh dishes with a few complementary ingredients.
  • Useful Beefsteak Size: Approximately 8–12-ounce fruit provides substantial slices without needing to harvest oversized tomatoes.
  • Indeterminate Habit: Supported vines can provide an extended picking season when weather and plant health allow.
  • Heirloom Variety: Grow an open-pollinated, non-GMO tomato. Maintaining true-to-type saved seed requires suitable isolation and selection.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Start Indoors: Sow approximately 6–8 weeks before your planned outdoor transplanting date, about 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Keep evenly moist without waterlogging and provide bright light after emergence.
  • Transplanting: Harden off seedlings gradually. Plant outdoors after frost danger has passed and soil and nights are warm.
  • Sun and Soil: Choose full sun and fertile, well-drained soil amended with finished compost.
  • Spacing: Allow approximately 24–36 inches between supported plants, with room between rows for ventilation and harvesting.
  • Support: Install tall stakes, a sturdy trellis, or heavy-duty cages early. Tie stems loosely as vines grow and support fruit-bearing branches.
  • Watering: Maintain consistent moisture at soil level. Mulch after soil warms to moderate moisture swings and reduce soil splash; uneven moisture can contribute to cracking.
  • Fertilizing: Follow soil-test guidance and fertilizer label directions. Avoid excess nitrogen that favors leaves over fruit.
  • Pruning and Care: Train vines to fit your support system and remove damaged foliage as needed without stripping away fruit-shading leaves. Monitor regularly for insects and disease.
  • Harvesting: Pick when fruit develops its characteristic dusky color and yields slightly to gentle pressure. Green shoulders may remain on ripe fruit, so assess texture as well as color.

Black Krim Tomato and White Bean Salad

Use harvested ripe Black Krim tomatoes, not the planting seeds in this packet. Serves 4 as a side dish. Preparation: 15 minutes. No cooking required when using canned beans.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ripe Black Krim tomatoes, cored and cut into wedges
  • 1 can (15 ounces) cannellini beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/4 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup torn fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Directions

  1. Wash tomatoes and basil under running water and gently dry. Core tomatoes and cut into bite-size wedges.
  2. Whisk olive oil, vinegar, salt, and pepper in a large bowl.
  3. Add drained beans, tomato wedges, and onion. Toss gently to avoid crushing the tomatoes.
  4. Fold in basil and let stand for 5 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning before serving.
