Sunland Romaine Lettuce Pelleted Seeds produce compact heads and hearts with thick, savoyed green leaves, straight ribs, and a tight, clean base. Selected for heat-tolerant performance, Sunland is earlier and more compact than Sparx. Its sturdy leaves bring a satisfying crunch to salads and sandwiches. Cut a freshly harvested heart on your kitchen board and turn those crisp leaves into a homemade Caesar-style salad.

Conventional seed with NOP-compliant pelleting makes individual seeds easier to see and handle. NOP-compliant pelleting does not mean the seeds are certified organic. Choose 60, 80, 100, or 200 seeds. Seed lot MT0-30.

Why Choose Sunland Pelleted Romaine?

  • Heat-tolerant performance: Selected for summer growing, Sunland can extend romaine production into warmer weather, although prolonged extreme heat can still affect quality.
  • Compact growth: Earlier and more compact than Sparx, Sunland is practical for space-conscious plantings.
  • Thick, savoyed leaves: Textured leaves and straight ribs offer a satisfying bite in fresh dishes.
  • Consistent production: Selected for dependable heads and hearts under suitable growing conditions.
  • Disease-resistance traits: Intermediate resistance to Corky Root and high resistance to Tomato Bushy Stunt Virus support performance; resistance is not immunity.
  • Precision-friendly pellets: Coated seeds are easier to see and space accurately.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Season: Sow for spring or fall harvests, using Sunland's heat tolerance to extend production into warmer periods.
  • Sunlight: Provide sun and good airflow. Afternoon protection can help in very hot conditions.
  • Soil: Prepare fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.
  • Sowing: Follow packet depth recommendations and cover lightly. Keep pellets consistently moist so their coating breaks down during germination.
  • Spacing: Thin or transplant to allow room for compact romaine heads to develop and air to circulate.
  • Water: Keep soil evenly moist without waterlogging; avoid letting germinating pellets dry out.
  • Fertilizer: Apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer according to label directions and soil needs.
  • Support: No staking or trellising is needed. Weed gently around shallow roots and monitor for slugs and aphids.
  • Harvest: Cut heads or hearts at the size you prefer before bolting. Harvest during cool hours and refrigerate promptly.

Sunland Romaine Caesar-Style Salad

Crisp harvested Sunland romaine pairs with a creamy lemon dressing made without raw egg. Serves 4 as a side. Prep time: 15 minutes. No cooking required with prepared croutons.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups harvested Sunland romaine, chopped
  • 1 cup prepared croutons
  • 1/3 cup shaved Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 small garlic clove, finely grated
  • 1–2 tablespoons water, as needed
  • Freshly ground black pepper and salt to taste

Directions

  1. Separate the romaine leaves, discard damaged portions, and rinse thoroughly under cool running water. Spin or pat dry, then chop into bite-size pieces.
  2. Whisk mayonnaise, lemon juice, olive oil, Dijon, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic until smooth. Thin with water as needed and season to taste.
  3. Toss lettuce with enough dressing to lightly coat. Fold in croutons and most of the Parmesan.
  4. Top with remaining Parmesan and black pepper. Serve immediately, passing extra dressing separately.

Options and Storage

Add cooked chickpeas for a heartier salad. Worcestershire sauce commonly contains fish; choose a suitable alternative if needed. Keep dressing, dry lettuce, and croutons separate until serving. Refrigerate leftovers promptly. Do not leave prepared salad at room temperature longer than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F.
