Tomato Cherry Matt's Wild is a true garden story in every tiny fruit. These deep-red cherry tomatoes are tender, smooth, full-flavored, and naturally sweet, with an average fruit size of about ½ ounce. Matt's Wild is an heirloom tomato from a seed line connected to Hidalgo in eastern Mexico, where Teresa Arellanos de Mena brought the seeds from her family's home state. She later shared them with Matt Leibman, who helped pass the variety along. The plants may produce less than modern high-yielding varieties, but the flavor makes the harvest worth savoring. Enjoy the soft, sweet fruit fresh from the garden or folded into salsa.

Germination Rate: 97%. Test Date: 03/26. JSS.

Why Choose Matt's Wild Cherry Tomato Seeds?

  • Exceptional flavor: Grow small cherry tomatoes with high natural sweetness, tender texture, and rich tomato flavor.
  • Deep-red fruit: Harvest smooth, dark-red tomatoes that bring vivid color to salads, snacks, and fresh dishes.
  • Heirloom story: Plant a variety with a memorable history connected to Hidalgo in eastern Mexico and the gardeners who shared its seed.
  • Fresh eating favorite: Pick the soft, ripe fruit and enjoy it straight from the garden, where its flavor is at its best.
  • Useful garden resilience: The existing variety description notes some resistance to early blight and late blight, though growing conditions still matter.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Choose a sunny location: Grow tomatoes where plants receive full sun and good airflow through the foliage.
  • Prepare the soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. A raised bed or large container can work well when drainage is reliable.
  • Start seeds indoors: Begin seeds indoors several weeks before your area's last frost, then harden seedlings gradually before transplanting.
  • Plant deeply: Set tomato seedlings deeply, covering part of the stem to encourage a strong root system.
  • Support the plants: Use a trellis, cage, or sturdy stake to keep vines and fruit off the ground and improve airflow.
  • Water consistently: Water at the soil line and keep moisture even. Avoid repeated wet-dry swings that can stress plants and affect fruit quality.
  • Feed thoughtfully: Use balanced fertility early, then avoid excessive nitrogen once flowering and fruiting begin.
  • Harvest gently: Pick ripe cherry tomatoes carefully because the fruit is soft and tender. Harvest often during peak production.

  • Salsa: Chop with onion, herbs, peppers, and lime for a bright fresh salsa.
  • Roasted: Roast gently with olive oil and garlic until the skins soften and the flavors concentrate.
  • Grilled: Thread carefully onto skewers or use a grill basket for a smoky summer side dish.
  • Pasta and grain bowls: Fold fresh or lightly cooked tomatoes into pasta, rice, couscous, or quinoa.
  • Preserved: Because the fruit is tender, use ripe tomatoes promptly or preserve them soon after harvest.
