Tomatillo Aunt Moliy's is a versatile and exceptionally robust heirloom tomatillo prized for its prolific production and outstanding adaptability to challenging growing conditions. This variety yields abundant, sizable green fruits up to 2 inches in diameter throughout the season — larger than many standard tomatillo varieties. Its durability is unmatched: Aunt Moliy’s performs exceptionally well in compact clay soil, extended dry spells, and hot southern climates where other tomatillo varieties struggle. The prolific fruiting habit means generous harvests from a single planting, with both plants required for cross-pollination and fruit set. A workhorse heirloom built for reliability, production, and authentic salsa verde flavor.

Germination Rate: 96%. Test Date: 7/26. TLM.

Why Choose Aunt Moliy's Tomatillo?

  • Exceptional Drought & Clay Tolerance: Thrives where other tomatillos fail — well-suited for southern climates, clay soils, and dry spells.
  • Large, Prolific Fruits: Produces abundant 2-inch green fruits throughout the season from a single planting — one of the most productive heirloom tomatillos available.
  • 96% Germination Rate: One of the highest germination rates in our tomatillo lineup — exceptional reliability from seed to seedling.
  • Authentic Salsa Verde Flavor: Tangy, bright, and full-flavored — the ideal tomatillo for fresh and cooked salsa verde preparations.
  • Heirloom & Open-Pollinated: Save seeds year after year for a self-sustaining garden.
  • Non-GMO: DNA structure never altered from natural traditional breeding methods.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Sunlight: Full sun — at least 6–8 hours per day for vigorous growth and prolific fruit set.
  • Soil: Adaptable to a wide range of soils including clay — performs well where most tomatillos struggle. Prefers pH 6.0–7.0. Amend with compost when possible.
  • Planting: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost date. Transplant outdoors after soil temps reach 60°F and nighttime temps stay above 50°F.
  • Spacing: Space plants 18–24 inches apart in rows 36 inches apart. Tomatillos require two or more plants for cross-pollination and fruit set.
  • Watering: Water consistently during establishment. Once established, Aunt Moliy’s is notably drought-tolerant. Reduce watering as fruits begin to fill husks.
  • Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced fertilizer at transplant, then switch to phosphorus-rich formula once flowering begins to support heavy fruit set.
  • Support: Stake or cage plants — Aunt Moliy’s can reach 3–4 feet and benefits from support as fruit load increases.
  • Harvesting: Harvest when husks split and fruits are firm and bright green. Do not harvest before husks loosen — fruits are not yet ripe. Season extends until first frost.

Cooking Methods & Uses

  • Fresh Salsa Verde: Blend raw Aunt Moliy’s with jalapeño, onion, garlic, and cilantro for a bright, tangy fresh salsa verde — the most authentic use of this variety.
  • Roasted Salsa: Char tomatillos under a broiler or on a comal for a deeper, smoky salsa with complex flavor.
  • Enchiladas Verdes: Simmer in chicken broth with peppers and garlic for a classic enchilada verde sauce.
  • Pozole Verde: The essential ingredient in green pozole — adds tartness and body to the broth.
  • Guacamole: Blend 1–2 raw tomatillos into guacamole for a tangy, bright lift that also prevents browning.
  • Preserving: Cook down with sugar and spices for a tangy tomatillo jam; freeze whole husked fruits for year-round use.

  • Seed Storage: Store seeds in a cool, dry location. Properly stored seeds maintain viability for 3–5 years.
  • Planting Zones: Grown as a warm-season annual in all USDA zones. Best in Zones 5–11; particularly productive in Zones 8–11 with long warm seasons.
