Why Choose Star Fighter Pelleted Lettuce?
- Heat tolerance: Helps extend production into warmer weather while maintaining the need for suitable growing conditions.
- Uniform heads: Medium-size heads and good yields suit garden beds, raised beds, and market-style harvests.
- Good flavor and texture: Shiny, slightly savoyed dark-green leaves add fresh crunch to salads and sandwiches.
- Bolt and tipburn tolerance: Excellent tolerance supports a useful harvest window.
- Downy Mildew resistance: High resistance to EU races 16–25, 27, and 30–32, and US races 5–9.
- Aphid resistance: High resistance to lettuce leaf aphid (Nasonovia ribisnigri) and lettuce root aphid (Pemphigus bursarius).
- Precision-friendly pellets: Visible coating helps with individual seed placement and spacing.
Planting Tips for Success
- Season: Plan spring or fall sowing using local planting calendars. Heat tolerance may help extend the season but does not make plants heat-proof.
- Light: Provide sun and good airflow. Afternoon protection can reduce stress during very hot weather.
- Soil: Prepare fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter.
- Sowing: Follow packet depth recommendations and cover lightly. Keep pellets evenly moist throughout germination so their coating breaks down; do not let them dry out.
- Spacing: Thin or transplant to give medium-size heads room to develop and air to circulate.
- Water: Maintain even moisture without waterlogging, particularly while seedlings establish.
- Fertilizing: Use a balanced vegetable fertilizer according to label directions and soil needs.
- Support and care: No staking or trellising is needed. Weed gently around shallow roots and monitor for pests even when resistance is listed.
- Harvest: Cut heads while leaves are crisp and before flowering. Refrigerate promptly.

Ingredients
- 6 cups chopped harvested Star Fighter lettuce
- 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 cup drained canned sweet corn or cooked, cooled sweet corn
- 1 cup diced tomatoes
- 1 ripe avocado, peeled, pitted, and diced
- 1/4 cup finely diced red onion
- 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
Directions
- Separate lettuce leaves, discard damaged portions, and rinse thoroughly under cool running water. Spin or pat dry and chop into bite-size pieces. Rinse other fresh produce before cutting, including the avocado before peeling.
- Whisk olive oil, lime juice, cumin, salt, and pepper in a small bowl.
- Combine lettuce, beans, corn, tomatoes, onion, and cilantro in a large bowl. Toss with enough dressing to lightly coat.
- Fold in avocado gently and serve immediately, passing remaining dressing separately.
Options and Storage
Replace cilantro with parsley if preferred. Add fully cooked, chilled chicken for a more substantial meal. Keep washed lettuce, other ingredients, and dressing refrigerated separately until serving, and add avocado at the last moment. Refrigerate leftovers promptly. Do not leave prepared salad at room temperature longer than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F.
