  • Color That Holds: The dark red coloration persists even in northern growing regions.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Choose the Right Season: Sow for spring or fall harvests, following local planting calendars for the best timing.
  • Provide Sunlight: Grow in a sunny location with good airflow. In hot conditions, afternoon protection can help keep leaves tender.
  • Prepare the Soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, and keep the seedbed free of weeds.
  • Plant Carefully: Place pelleted seeds at the depth recommended on the packet, then cover lightly and avoid burying them too deeply.
  • Space for Heads: Thin or transplant seedlings so compact mini heads have room to fill and airflow can reach the foliage.
  • Keep Moisture Even: Water consistently so the soil stays evenly moist but not waterlogged, especially while seedlings are establishing.
  • Feed as Needed: Start with fertile soil and apply a balanced vegetable fertilizer according to label directions when plants need additional nutrition.
  • Harvest on Time: Cut heads when they reach the desired mini-romaine size and remain dense, crisp, and richly colored.
