Planting Tips for Success
- Light: Provide full sun in cool weather and afternoon protection in hot climates.
- Soil: Use fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost.
- Sowing: Sow about 1/4 inch deep, following packet guidance, or start indoors and transplant gently. Keep pellets consistently moist during germination so the coating breaks down.
- Spacing: Space plants about 8–10 inches apart in rows 12–18 inches apart.
- Water: Maintain even moisture without waterlogging; avoid allowing germinating pellets to dry out.
- Fertilizer: Feed moderately with balanced fertilizer according to soil needs and label directions. Avoid excess nitrogen.
- Support and care: No staking or trellising is needed. Weed gently around shallow roots and monitor for pests.
- Season: Plan succession sowings for locally suitable spring, summer, and fall conditions. Tolerance does not make lettuce heat-proof.
- Harvest: Cut dense heads at the base when ready, before bolting, and refrigerate promptly.
