Why Choose Sweetie Cherry Tomato?

  • Sweet Flavor: Ripe cherry tomatoes bring natural sweetness to snacks and savory salads without a promise of identical flavor in every garden.
  • Indeterminate Growth: Supported vines can provide repeated harvests through favorable growing weather.
  • Fresh Kitchen Versatility: Small fruit works well halved in salads, roasted for toast, or gently cooked into a quick sauce.
  • Heirloom Variety: Open-pollinated seed offers a seed-saving option when suitable isolation and selection practices are followed.
  • Garden Appeal: Clusters of red tomatoes add color to productive beds and large supported container plantings.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Start Indoors: Sow about 6–8 weeks before your planned transplant date, approximately 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Maintain even moisture and provide bright light after emergence.
  • Transplant: Harden seedlings off gradually. Plant outdoors after frost danger passes and soil warms.
  • Sunlight: Provide 6–8 hours of direct sunlight for strong growth and fruit production.
  • Soil: Choose fertile, well-drained soil amended with finished compost. Use soil testing to guide amendments.
  • Spacing: Allow approximately 24–36 inches between supported plants and adequate room for airflow and harvest access.
  • Support: Install a sturdy tall cage, stake, or trellis early and tie new growth loosely as vines develop.
  • Water and Mulch: Water consistently at soil level. Mulch after soil warms to moderate moisture swings and reduce soil splash.
  • Fertilizing: Follow soil-test guidance and fertilizer label directions. Avoid excessive nitrogen that favors leaves over fruit.
  • Pruning: Remove damaged lower leaves and manage crowded growth without stripping protective foliage from fruit.
  • Containers: Use a large pot with drainage holes, quality potting mix, and strong support. Check moisture frequently in hot weather.
  • Harvest: Pick fully red fruit that yields slightly to gentle pressure. Maturity and harvest duration vary with temperature, planting date, and care.

Sweetie Cherry Tomato and White Bean Salad

Made with harvested tomatoes, not planting seeds. Serves 4 as a side. Preparation: approximately 15 minutes. No cooking required when using canned beans.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups ripe Sweetie cherry tomatoes, washed and halved
  • 1 can cannellini beans, 15 ounces, drained and rinsed
  • 1/4 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, washed and dried
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Directions

  1. Place tomatoes, drained beans, red onion, and parsley in a serving bowl.
  2. Whisk olive oil and lemon juice with pepper and a small pinch of salt.
  3. Pour dressing over the salad and toss gently to avoid crushing the beans.
  4. Taste and adjust seasoning. Serve promptly or refrigerate covered until serving.
