Bring versatile white roots to your cool-season garden with Radish Daikon Japanese Minowase. This non-GMO heirloom produces long, tapered roots that can reach up to 24 inches under favorable conditions. Crisp white flesh offers a generally mild radish flavor for shredded salads, braised dishes, soups, and tested pickling recipes. Flavor and pungency vary with weather and harvest timing. Listed maturity is approximately 60 days. Deep, loose soil helps roots develop their characteristic shape. This packet contains 1000 seeds.

Germination Rate: 85%. Test Date: 12/25. WILL.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 75%

Why Choose Japanese Minowase Daikon?

  • Long White Roots: Tapered roots provide plenty of crisp flesh for slicing, shredding, and cooking.
  • Kitchen Versatility: Enjoy raw in salads or cook until tender in broths and braised dishes.
  • Cool-Season Harvest: Approximately 60-day maturity fits many fall planting schedules when local conditions are suitable.
  • Fresh Storage: Remove tops and refrigerate sound roots to help preserve quality after harvest.
  • Heirloom and Non-GMO: Grow a traditional open-pollinated variety; seed saving requires appropriate isolation and allowing selected plants to mature seed.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Timing: Direct sow during suitable cool weather. Fall is often a useful window; follow local guidance because long days and heat can affect bolting and root quality.
  • Sunlight: Choose at least 6 hours of direct sun where possible.
  • Soil: Prepare deep, loose, well-drained soil. Remove stones and large clods; shallow or compacted soil can limit root length and shape.
  • Sowing: Sow approximately 1/2 inch deep directly where plants will grow rather than transplanting.
  • Spacing: Thin to approximately 4–6 inches apart with rows 12–18 inches apart.
  • Watering: Maintain even moisture without waterlogging. Moisture stress can affect texture and flavor.
  • Fertilizing: Follow soil-test recommendations and avoid excess nitrogen that encourages foliage over roots.
  • Harvest: Begin checking around 60 days, when roots are approximately 2–3 inches across. Loosen soil carefully alongside roots before lifting to reduce breakage.
  • After Harvest: Trim tops promptly and refrigerate roots. Inspect stored produce regularly and discard spoiled pieces.

Ginger-Soy Braised Minowase Daikon

Use harvested daikon roots, not planting seeds. Makes 4 side-dish servings. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook: 30–40 minutes. Total: 40–50 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds Japanese Minowase daikon
  • 2 cups low-sodium vegetable broth, plus more if needed
  • 1 tablespoon reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, finely grated
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons thinly sliced green onion

Directions

  1. Scrub daikon under running water, trim ends, and peel. Cut into rounds approximately 3/4 inch thick; halve especially wide rounds for even cooking.
  2. Arrange in a wide saucepan. Add broth, soy sauce, ginger, and sugar. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  3. Cover partially and simmer gently for 30–40 minutes, turning pieces once, until a knife slides easily into the centers. Add a little more broth if needed to prevent drying or scorching.
  4. Stir in rice vinegar. Taste the broth before adding any extra seasoning.
  5. Serve rounds with a little cooking broth and sprinkle with green onion.

Storage and Safety

Soy sauce contains soy and commonly wheat; choose a suitable alternative if needed. Refrigerate leftovers in a shallow covered container within 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. Keep at 40°F or below and use within 3–4 days. Reheat leftovers to 165°F.
