Tropicana Loose-Leaf Lettuce Pelleted Seeds produce generous harvests of crisp, mild green leaves for fresh salads and sandwiches. This vigorous loose-leaf variety offers heat and bolt tolerance, corky root resistance, and tipburn tolerance. Harvest outer leaves while keeping the growing center intact, or gather a whole plant for a family salad. Picture a fresh morning harvest on your cutting board, ready to chop into a colorful garden lunch.

Heat tolerance does not make lettuce immune to extreme temperatures or bolting. Consistent moisture and well-timed plantings still matter. Choose 60, 80, 100, or 200 pelleted seeds for easier handling and more precise sowing.

Germination Rate: 97%. Test Date: 8/25. JSS.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 80%

Why Choose Tropicana Pelleted Lettuce?

  • Fresh eating quality: Crisp, mild leaves complement light dressings and a wide range of garden vegetables.
  • Flexible harvest: Gather outer leaves while preserving the center for continued growth, or harvest the whole loose-leaf plant.
  • Heat and bolt tolerance: Useful growing traits support a longer harvest window, although cool weather still favors lettuce quality.
  • Resistance and tolerance: Corky root resistance and tipburn tolerance support plant performance but do not guarantee a problem-free crop.
  • Precise sowing: Visible pellets make seeds easier to position and can reduce unnecessary thinning.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Season: Plant for spring and fall harvests. Stagger sowings for a continuing supply of tender leaves.
  • Sunlight: Provide full sun in mild weather; afternoon shade can help during warmer periods.
  • Soil: Prepare fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost.
  • Sowing: Plant shallowly, about 1/8–1/4 inch deep. Keep pellets consistently moist so the coating breaks down and seedlings establish.
  • Spacing: Allow approximately 10–12 inches between plants for full-size growth. Closer plantings may be used for young leaves, thinning as needed.
  • Water: Maintain even moisture without waterlogging; do not allow pellets to dry out during germination.
  • Fertilizer: Use a balanced vegetable fertilizer according to its label and your soil's needs.
  • Support and care: No staking or trellising is needed. Weed gently near shallow roots and watch for aphids and slugs.
  • Harvest: Pick tender leaves in the cool part of the day, leaving the growing center intact for repeat harvests. Refrigerate promptly.

Tropicana Chopped Garden Salad with Lime Dressing

Fresh harvested Tropicana lettuce makes a crisp base for a colorful bean-and-vegetable salad. Serves 4. Prep time: 20 minutes. No cooking required when using cooked or canned corn.

Ingredients

  • 6 cups harvested Tropicana lettuce, chopped into bite-size pieces
  • 1 small cucumber, sliced into half-moons
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 cup cooked or canned sweet corn, cooled and drained
  • 1 can (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 ripe avocado, diced
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Directions

  1. Discard damaged lettuce leaves and rinse thoroughly under cool running water. Spin or pat dry, then chop into bite-size pieces.
  2. Whisk olive oil, lime juice, cumin, salt, and pepper in a small bowl.
  3. Combine lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, cooled corn, and black beans in a large serving bowl.
  4. Add avocado and enough dressing to lightly coat. Toss gently and serve immediately, passing extra dressing separately.

Options and Storage

Add chopped cilantro or thinly sliced green onion if desired. Prepare washed lettuce, vegetables, and dressing ahead and refrigerate separately; add avocado and dressing just before serving. Refrigerate leftovers promptly. Do not leave prepared salad at room temperature longer than 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F.
