Grow a harvest worth keeping with Patterson Long-Day Onion. This non-GMO hybrid produces medium-large, blocky bulbs with dark yellow skins and thin necks that dry readily during curing. Valued for storage potential and reliable yields, Patterson brings classic onion flavor to roasted dishes, soups, and everyday cooking. Choose 60, 80, 100, or 200 pelleted seeds.

Match the onion to your location: Patterson is a long-day variety suited to northern growing areas, approximately 38° to 55° latitude. It is not the usual choice for full-size bulb production in southern Texas. The existing listing gives approximately 180 days to harvest; actual timing depends on sowing method, season, and location.

Germination Rate: 98%. Test Date: 03/26. JSS.

Texas Minimum Germination Rate: 70%

Why Choose Patterson Onions?

  • Storage potential: Properly matured and cured sound bulbs can keep for months under suitable cool, dry, ventilated conditions; storage life varies.
  • Useful yellow bulbs: Medium-large, blocky onions suit roasting, sautéing, and other everyday recipes.
  • Thin necks: Necks dry readily during proper curing, helping prepare bulbs for storage without guaranteeing freedom from decay.
  • Long-day selection: A practical option for gardeners in appropriate northern latitudes.
  • Easier seed placement: Pellets improve visibility and handling during sowing.

Planting Tips for Success

  • Plan for day length: Choose this variety where long summer days support bulbing. Follow regional onion calendars rather than assuming a fall planting suits every location.
  • Start early: Start indoors approximately 8 to 12 weeks before your local transplant window, or direct sow where the growing season allows.
  • Sow shallowly: Plant approximately 1/4 inch deep in fine seed-starting mix or prepared soil. Maintain even moisture as pellets soften and seedlings emerge.
  • Provide space: Set established seedlings approximately 4 to 6 inches apart. Plant shallowly without deeply burying the neck.
  • Sun and soil: Choose full sun and fertile, well-drained soil enriched with mature compost.
  • Water and fertilize: Water consistently during active growth without waterlogging. Feed according to soil-test results and fertilizer-label directions; avoid excessive late nitrogen.
  • Support and harvest: Staking is unnecessary. Allow tops to fall naturally as bulbs mature, then harvest when local conditions permit drying.
  • Cure before storage: Dry bulbs in a sheltered, well-ventilated place until necks and outer skins are dry. Store only sound, cured bulbs and inspect regularly for soft spots or decay.

What Are Pelleted Seeds?

A coating gives seeds a more uniform shape for easier handling and spacing. Keep the seedbed evenly moist while pellets soften; pelleting does not guarantee emergence. Learn more about pelleted seeds.

Thyme-Roasted Patterson Onion Wedges

Use harvested Patterson onion bulbs, not the contents of the seed packet. Serves 4 as a side. Prep: 15 minutes. Cook: 35 to 45 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 pounds harvested Patterson onions
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, or 1/3 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice, optional

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 400°F. Rinse onions, remove papery skins, trim the dry root ends, and cut each bulb into 6 to 8 wedges, retaining a little clean base to help hold layers together.
  2. Toss wedges with olive oil, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  3. Arrange in one layer on a rimmed baking sheet, with a cut side against the pan.
  4. Roast for 35 to 45 minutes, turning carefully after approximately 20 minutes, until tender with browned edges. Check smaller wedges early.
  5. Finish with optional lemon juice, adjust seasoning, and serve warm.

Recipe Tips and Storage

Keep wedges similar in size for even cooking. If edges brown before centers soften, cover loosely with foil for part of the cooking time. Refrigerate cooked leftovers in a covered container within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F. Use within 3 to 4 days and reheat leftovers to 165°F. This is a roasted side dish, not a tested canning recipe.
